Enquiring minds want to know...If none of the above suits, right in your choice. Have fun!
as I blow up, I say GG...
-
I sure do let players know if they killed me or I killed myself. There is a big difference. ;)
-
I guess no one ever loses to better play, just loses from bad play.
-
I can't remember.. it's been so long..
Actually I always say "GG" it may have a caveat though,
if I did make a mistake I'll let someone know, they still get a GG though
as they still had to have been in a position to take advantage of my mistake.
The only people that beat me and don't get GG's are the ones that get like 2DN's as AI
when I get a pair of FF's.
Oh and t00l
I hates him I does.

How about "OMG, PWN!!!!11!!!!"

YOU FU*&ING CHEATER!!! I KNOW YOU HACK! LEAVE THE SERVER YOU F*&ING HACKER! LEAVE OR I WILL MAKE THE ADMIN BAN YOU!!!

This is a funny thread... cuz yeah, the gg thing at the end... some players type that when u got pwnd hard... I mean thats like rubbing salt in someones eyes. Sometimes when I pwn someone so bad, I type gg? kinda leaving up to them to decide what to say about the conclusion... I'm not one to rub it in... unless its well deserved...
But sometimes when I'm pwnd... and it wasnt even a gg at all, so one sided... my opponent types GG! and its like, no it wasnt... I think it allcomes down to what u define as a gg. My take is its a fun match that was a close fight where both players likely had fun... When its a landslide, thats not a gg... thats a massacre. How can you in good faith as a player sit there and insult someone by suggesting your kicking his ass was a gg? Doesnt make any sense to me...
gg = goodness gracious.
-
More seriously......
On GSA, I will usually chat after the game about what each of us did right or wrong, and how our decisions may have made the game end differently. Hopefully I don't sound too much like an arse when I mention the mistakes I made that may have let my opponent get in a good volley or two.
On D2, I'll usually just say "GG" or "Well Played!" if they blow me up (so long as the session doesn't end before I can type it out) unless they hail me in general chat and want to discuss things. I try to not spend much time in general chat, however, as the game keeps going while I type. So usually the conversations on D2 are much shorter than they would be on GSA.
Sometimes I have to leave a PvP before a fight is over. A usual departing line from a plasma vs. plasma battle that ends that way might be, "We could probably play for another hour, but I think the damage done so far gives you the win and I've got to go."

-
See I type GG unless I'm PO'd at the player.
For all I know- maybe he gave it his best effort and just doesn't know how to fight
against a Lyran BCV (t00l..DH..) gg to me is more indicitive of someone having made an effort.
Killing me gets a GG, unless you're one of the players I don't like,(ie whom I haven't beaten yet) in which case it gets a torrent of vindictive whining and crying as well as baseless accusations of cheesiness & cheating. (seriously)
99% of games I play though get a GG, as I think the other guy has at least tried.
-
i type gg because im not the best of players, an any fights i get into that last over 20 mins (tis most for me) are good cause i tend to die easily sometimes ;)
-
my battles usually end with me seeing the wave of drones coming in and me typing, "BLOODY HELL.... gg lol"
or, as I'm watching my power drop to 4 as the fighters swarm my ship.
Anyone I fight gets a "gg" if I'm in a ship class way smaller... I always stay and fight.
-
I give everyone a GG, unless it ends before I finish typing. Only exception would be if someone was ignorant directly to me. I feel that even a small ship running away deserves a gg as he did run away as he should have. A larger ship, should it force me to run or just win due to being bigger, not necessarily better, still gets a GG because he flew. If he made mistakes, he will know(because he is dead) and still gets a GG because he most likely will have learnt something for it.
All games are good, because if they werent, we would not be here. therefore GG ALL.

Zinged for karma too! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Right, I'm the child.... ;D

Frak off. I haven't touched your karma.
Never have used it except by accident.
I think it is others who are just pointing out that you are acting like a child.
-
...for questioning the nature of telling an opponent they only won because you played "sub Par" etc. etc. Look in the mirror.

Bear, Tobin, the both of you need to knock it off and chill. It's pissing me off that two guys who I consider friends are sniping at each other over stupid crap that you both can simply agree to disagree and leave it at that. I don't care who started it, but I'm ending it. KNOCK IT OFF! >:(
-
I will question your pestering me on these boards.
You are acting as a child and it is not worth my time to play with you.
And next time I get the chance, I will push you off the board, just b/c it will tick you off.
Enjoy the evening, I am going to watch hockey then go to work.

No Wanderer, I have no problem what so ever.
Tobin is the one with a problem with SOV and with ME.
So talk to him. I am done with it.

Why isn't there a F***!!! option?
-
I usually will type "GG". On occassion I'll type that I flew poorly and my oponent made me pay for my mistakes. In those cases I'm usually seeking a rematch, not that I could win one, but that I'd like to fly one just so my opponent knows that I'm normally capable of flying better. If I get beat by skill and creative tactics despite my flying realitively well I'll type "Well Done" or "Nice piloting" or some such and I'll usually post something on the forums or type something in general chat to that effect as well celebrating the skill of the pilot who just beat me, especially if I had what I considered to be the superior ship.
I also generally avoid posting my kills on those silly chest thumping kill threads, unless there are VCS involved with the outcome of the match, or it was a particularly close or interesting fight in which case I'm interested in discussing some aspect of the tactics rather than any discussion focusing on who won or lost. I've always felt that posting kills for the sake of chest thumping is unsportsman-like and not good for the comunity in general unless the match was between fleetmates or particularly close friends. Also its ok when someone gets paid back a bit, like when t00l got captured by Hexx. T00l brought that posting on himself for years of Hexx screenshots. However, I'll gladly post it when slamming my wingman into a planet or asteroid.
All that being said, there is nothing wrong with a bit of chest thumping or making posts to boost the morale of your side, I just feel that the general forums is not the place for it. We have the team forums at SFC2.Net that are the appropriate place for those posts. You kill someone there you can post it without making your opponent look bad to the rest of his teammates. I want to keep players interested in the game and to keep any new arrivals we get, not chase them off by making them feel like they let their team down when they die despite doing their best.
I salute those players who have died and had their names posted on kill threads by some inconsiderate "chest-thumper" and have still stuck with the game, to me thats more impressive than any number of kills that someone posts.
I think I been keeping that back for quite sometime not wanting to offend the "Chest-thumpers" many of whom I consider good friends, but maybe its better to make them think a bit before they thump their chest the next time, I just hope they take it as friendly advice.
-
I don't know that posting a kill in general will make someone "look bad"; I think most pilots realize that a lot of battles go by what ships were flown, what the situation was and what the pilots had for breakfast that morning.
If I post a kill it's not to humiliate someone, just more along the lines of a good natured ribbing. I know full well that anyone I pwn may end up pwning me tomorrow.
Even Hexx apparently. :P

Thats why I said among close friends and fleetmates I wasn't really bothered with such posts, but vs those I don't know so well and newer players I think its better to keep the posts off general unless a VC is involved.

Indeed. But don't forget, you don't dare point out that if you would have flown better or different that the outcome could have changed. That is apparently offensive to some players. ::)

I agree, especially when it comes to newbs. Private racial or fleet forums are one thing, but posting in general that you killed Joe Klink's F5C in ugly ways in his first ever D2 battle with your DN just doesn't strike me as very sporting.

Totally agree... I mean if a captain brags about a kill vs a newb especially one in an equal or smaller hull class, that just makes the bragger look really really bad. It's one thing to boast about a kill that was well deserved and another to humiliate someone.
Course, kill boasting is totally ok imo, but its got to be done in good taste. I think posting that sorta thing here on this forum in a tasteful manner is A ok, but if you are pwning a side totally with newb kills and others as well, that sort of thing is morale food for you side and needs to be kept on your own private forums... not here. Just mho.
Going a bit further, posting a kill as per VC's, sure, keep it professional: Killed Dfly in his CA with my CA, gg. Like that. But if you did this: 'Killed Dfly's DN with my FF, Yes I am the greatest! Bow down b4 me and worship your master', sure thats cool, cuz Dfly is a good captain and I'm good enough friends I can get away with that... without losing too much karma, hehe. That sort of thing is even good for roleplay stories. I think it just depends on who you kill, how and how you present the kill on the forums. Every post is unique and there isnt a set ettiquette for the way u do it. Just try to be tasteful, after all, aint that what that karma feature is all about?
Like if you kill me, it wouldnt surprise me if peeps threw at me the kitchen sink on boasting and jibbing, hehe. Hell, I deserve every bit of it I'm sure!

<sigh> Since I think you're about the one person I haven't killed on a server I think it's about time for a lesson.
Might have to fly coalition for the first day or two on SGO..
Have to see how good that CF of yours really is...

Regardless of whether I win or loose, I always let the other players know "GG".
I think that's an honorable thing to do.
-
Ya, Frey, but cmon, havent u won so decidedly, I mean u so pwnd them that you almost feel typing gg is an insult to them? Sometimes I just dont type anything... edit: I mean, I've been there too. I have been so pwnd before it was embarrassing and the other guy types GG! and its like, no it wasnt! That's lame.

I can agree with what Diz is saying there. For instance, getting caught in a deathdrag and having your DD blow up in a matter of seconds.
-
That all may be true, but it is still polite to say GG. If I feel I smacked some one around like a red headed stepchild <cough-Dizzy-cough>, I usually try to offer advice as to why I won so easily and try to improve their game. If I get smacked around, I usually ask for advice if I can't figure out what I did wrong.
-
Exactly, corbo. I mean, now lets get into this... If we really didnt even get into our match and you got the upper hand and smacked me down hard handing me my pwng papers b4 the door hit me on the way out, then f*ck no, dont dare say GG or ur an ass.
Makes me sick when ppl are pwnd hard b4 there was even a game and they say, GG!. Bastards. All of them.
-
But you're missing the point. Its just good etiquette. Rubbing it in is bad form. Besides, it was a good game for at least one of you! :P ;D
-

I don't feel it's about ego.
If someone blastes the smack outta me, then I will give them a "GG" because that's me.
If I blasticate the smack outta someone else, then since I know what it's like to be in the opposite situation that I don't want them to feel bad.
It's just a game, for Christs sake.
Exactly, Corbo - it's about etiquette and honor - and I'm starting to wonder if any respect that concept any more.
-
I see what u are saying... but it is not a generally accepted practice. Therefore some see saying such a thing after what can arguably be considered a bad game, insulting in the extreme, either that or ignorant and insensitive.
-
Again, perhaps that's because people don't understand the concept of "gentlemanly combat".
This is a GAME - GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME !!
If we cannot - as a community and as people - understand and respect one another....well, what's the frakking point?
If someone feels so badly because they got smackicated that the opposing player saying "GG, well tried" is insulting, I don't think they need to be playing OP...
They need to be getting some counselling !!!!
:o
-
I'm beginning to see your point of view Dizzy. Would typing "Damn you suck!" be more appropriate? ::)
-
Frey, honor and respect have nothing to do with typing GG. Using GG in some situations as has been described is purely bad form. So if you concluded this thread into what you say after you lose a pvp match, GG may not be one of the things you should say if you do want to show honor and respect. ;)
Regards,
-
I'm beginning to see your point of view Dizzy. Would typing "Damn you suck!" be more appropriate? ::)
Absolutely not. And you are way off base.
-

So what do you suggest? Type nothing and let the person feel you and all your buddies on TS are  and ripping them a new one?
Like I said, offering advice will immediately dispel any lingering doubt as to your intentions when offering up a GG. They don't have to accept it, but the offer is self explanatory.
-
I would much rather receive a GG if the game was good, or bad, or down right ugly on my end or the other guy's end. Getting no GG(sometimes though it happens because you typed it too slow and game ended) because it seemed unbalanced to me is, well, worse.
Just common courtesy to offer a GG. if the other person really feels it was not, he will type it out. This I know, I have seen it. I have to go with Frey on this one.
-
DONT offer GG if there wasnt one. That is my point. Offering advice may also be insulting... may even make you look like an arrogant ass.
Here's what you do. You type 'GG?' if you win by a landslide that wasnt even a game. That sets the tone for the losing player to confirm or deny such a suggestion. Then go from there.
You do not type GG if u lose by a landslide that wasnt even a game. Type something else, like, 'U sure pwnd me'. That opens the door for communication on possible advice and other handy things.
Bottom line is dont type GG if it wasnt one. What is so hard about that? Mb this community needs a server rule on that?
Rule Suggestion:
- - You have the right to ask your opponent at the end of a match if it Is a valid tactic to say GG when a match is concluded. This must be proceeded by talking about the validity of dropping a GS on ftrs 1st.
-
And who is the judge on whether it was good or not?
-
Typing "GG" is never inappropriate. Even if it was a lousy game.
NOT typing it is just downright rude.
Competitiveness should never trump conduct and sportsmanship.
-

Typing GG right after u waste someone b4 the game even started IS inappropriate. It smacks of rudeness and chest thumping. It isnt respectful or good sportsmanship. It is insulting, inflamatory and disrespectful.
If your acronym vocabulary is so limited to GG then maybe you should go brush up on some new ones: http://www.lingo2word.com/lists/acronym_listA.html

You're nuts. WTF do YOU type? OMG, I SO PWNED JOO!!!! LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!11!!!!1! TRY 2 SHO UP NEXT TIME L4M3R!!!!!1!!!11!!
-
I've always typed Good Game whether I’ve won or lost, as I believe its common courtesy to do so. Even if the game wasn’t particularly thrilling or if it was the case that I had perhaps made mistakes that lead to the outcome of the game I would still always type GG. That's the good thing about the sportsmanship the majority of the time around here, I’d rather see GG's than the term "pwned!" as seen in games such as CS.
-
perhaps impose a new rule
: Type GG to anyone you fly against, unles his name is Dizzy ;)
-

You are going off the deep end in exactly the opposite direction I am talking about. You conservative holier than thou it's my way or the highway peeps need to chill and broaden your horizons. It's not all black and white. Blanketing GG on every situation is just narrow.
Try apologizing for pwning someone, mb? Make excuses for why you are so good. Blame it on lag... or luck or weather.
As champion of the players who get pwnd and feel humiliated by better captains such as yourself, tool, who say GG and rub it in, I say WE = whatever.

Hehe... I'm gonna have to come up with some new and colorful acronyms... hehe.
-
Well i say GG ,after the game.
I find it unfitting if the game is still in progress and only one player fell.
GG means the whole game.
If the game was a joke i tend to say nothing especially if i feel there was no real competiton within the game.Usually there is atleast a minimum feedback i give.
I for example ,would have real trouble saying GG after getting unfairly tractored, plus to peek it, get moved in a rock.,not that that ever happend to me..,but nonetheless.;)
The whole thing is depending a bit on what you consider a GG.
If not that ,i would say Thanks for the game, without label..It depends a bit on your opponent too ,of course.
-

You see tool? There is life outside the box.
-
I find that patronizing, and belittling to my opponent.
He knows if he had a bad game. I sure as hell don't need to point it out to him.
"GG" has become customary beyond the point of its literal meaning, to the point where not saying it is insulting.
-

How can "Thanks for the game" be appropriate when by your own standards, there wasn't even a game?
I'll ask again - Who is the judge of whether it is a good game?
-
Well as i said , if there wasnt even a game i would comment on that eventually.
And i wight in in my decision if the game was good or not, things like tactics and their merit, effort,.. inspiration, balance and, nominal for all games, the time effort everyone brought along.
Thats where thanks for the game/time comes in.
Those things are partialy based on subjective stances of course, and are in general based on your access to the balance concept imo.
-
perhaps impose a new rule
: Type GG to anyone you fly against, unles his name is Dizzy ;)
And vs Dizzy we should all use Special Thanks From Us For The Match or "STFUFTM", but that might take to long to type with the mission closing, so why don't we shorten it to "STFU" ;D
-

Well, isnt it about whether or not the game was fun? Maybe we could just type in "FG" for Fun Game. :)
Oh wait... FG could stand for something else too... :o

Unless the match ends b4 I finish typing "gg" is the what is offered.Be the match was long or short, good or bad, kill or been killed I think it's just polite to acknowledge that it was FUN (even if I or other sucked) and that it is a GAME(something that seems to be forgotten to often).I will usally say gg in general chat after the fact also.
-
Taking a spin on Tracey's input...
GG == tip of the hat, thanks for the match
VGG == WOW, seeya in 15, I gotta find some muscle relaxants to unclench my jaw... (and figure out how to take it :p ), maybe grow my fingernails back too
-
Any game I win is a GG, and any game I lose
must have been to a l33t pilot.
So by definition any game where something happens is a GG.
Remember GG, doesn't need to mean you're congratulating the other pilot on flying well
(screw them, they lost)
It can simply be admitting that once again you flew brilliantly.
-
Well said Hexx. ;)
-
i just usually say gg followed by BASTARD....or perhaps F***ING (i dont use stars though lol) BASTARD.......or vice versa but hey thats me and i dont make it personal in any way :P
-
I gave you another karma, shin, just cuz I feel sorry for you... ;)

I agree with Soth's statement. Atleast you're acknowledging your opponent for his/her time and effort, not to mention just plain old sportsmanship. If anyone finds such an acknowledgement insulting, either way, they should probably just play the solo campaigns. IMHO
