The ability of programs like SetiQueue to be a single point of contact for many Seti clients is important to maximum work unit production. Many of the machines currently processing Seti work units do not have an internet connection, but connect to a single machine that does.
Remove the ability of SetiQueue to act as that single point of contact, and you also remove all of those non-internet connected machines from the pool.

If you are unable to connect due to "100" errors (or perhaps "41") you may need to exit SETI@home, remove the files "result.sah" and "user_info.sah" from your system, and then restart SETI@home. This is probably fallout from the user database crash a few days ago. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've been on the team since it was started and I've actually been crunching SETI WUs since May of 1999 but as of this past weekend, I'd decided to pretty much stop participating in the project. In fact, they pretty much ceased about two weeks ago due to my wife always closing the SETI Driver program rather than just minimizing it when she was using the computer. During that time, I got passed up by one or two guys on our team that I was outproducing. Aside from a general boredom with the program itself, I've grown tired of fighting the Spousal Unit's general disregard for my wish to crunch SETI WUs as quickly as possible.
I'll likely just leave my meager total of completed WUs with the Taldren team but my slow and steady trickle of 10-15 WUs per day will cease.

You receive a "scoring" by how long, or how many, of these "units" you "crunch" to discover where these "signals" are coming from.
There is no pay in the use of your personal computer even though you are providing the resourses in which to "crunch" the "units" made of "signals".
Is this correct?

Microsoft man funds ET search
March 21, 2004 - 1:52AM
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, one of the richest men on Earth, today pledged to donate $US13.5 million ($17.99 million) for research into extra-terrestrial life.
With the contribution, Allen will have given $US25 million ($33.32 million) for construction of the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), a network of 350 radio telescopes being built to find signs of life in space, said Thomas Pierson, director of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute.
The radio telescopes will measure the density of the early universe, the formation of stars and magnetic fields.
They will also be capable of searching for "possible signals from technologically advanced civilisations elsewhere in the galaxy," according to a SETI statement.
The announcement of Allen's donation coincided with the completion of the project's research and development phases, which Allen funded with an $US11.5 million ($15.33 million) donation.
The $US13.5 million donation will pay for the first two phases of construction of the ATA, according to the statement.
One network of 32 telescopes will be available for research by the end of 2004 and the entire network of 350 telescopes will be completed "late in the decade," it said.
SETI and the Radio Astronomy Laboratory of the University of California at Berkley teamed up for the ATA project.
"I am very excited to be supporting one of the world's most visionary efforts to seek basic answers to some of the fundamental question about our universe and what other civilisations may exist elsewhere," Allen said in a ceremony in Mountain View, California, where SETI is based.

Brag, Brag, Brag!
I may only have one lil 2.8 laptop now, but it pumps one out about every 4-6 hours, causing my avg wu per day to go up about 5% in a month, and has dropped my average time approx 20 minutes in that same month.
Quote:
I wonder if I should have my old 733 STOP doing wu's, as it actually hurts my averages? It takes anywhere from 11 (RARE) to 30 (not quite as rare) hours to turn one out, with the avg being around 19 or so. It is amazing how much faster a new pc will churn these things out.

Ive done almost a hundred units in the last month. Of course, I saw where Raven said he was gonna top 1 THOUSAND a freaking DAY later this summer, but for this mere mortal, 100 a month is pretty good, lol!

BTW, Raven is at #46 on the home users list now! Congrats.

Quote:
Well, here is the deal. The 733 uses XP Pro, so I have the client running on it, BUT, I also have seti as the screensaver, as it appears that other screensavers have to fight with the seti client for cpu cycles. (The starfield looks like the Enterprise is running out of gas, it stutters) I have the screensaver only stay up for one minute then go blank... Not sure why the time is less than what you think it should be, this is actually a 750, not a 733, but it is a 750 on a 100mhz clock, not 133. Perhaps that is the reason?
Quote:
The laptop is running XP HOME, so you said I cant run the client. Perhaps that is the reason for the time lag?

Although I will never get anywhere close to you boys with hardware like Dragon and Nemesis, I have added a P4-2.8 laptop to my inventory and it cranks out one wu about every 4-6 hours, not sure why there is such a large variation. Anyhow, I have FINALLY gotten myself away from the dirt eater on the list and am making progress at moving ahead of some of the mid level peeps who no longer are putting out new units.
Hoping to build a new P4-3.06/800mhz desktop in the near future, so that will also help my unit speed greatly if I can scrape the cash together. Wow, Taldren in the top 100 in the WORLD?!

The laptop is running XP HOME, so you said I cant run the client. Perhaps that is the reason for the time lag?

I just took a performance hit myself. I've been waiting since May for my parents to leave town so I could swap their ancient 350mhz Pentium II machine for a more modern Athlon XP2400+. That reduces my output from ~45 to ~37 WU's/day. Down to 3 machines.
I was slowly gaining on Dragon, I'm not sure if I still will be with the downgrade. :(
Well, I am down for the weekend. A thunderstorm last night took the access server offline and it won't be fixed until Mon AM. My 4th machine has been taken offline by my neighbor (it is his machine) and my 2 home machines have full BOINC caches.

Einstein@home is a program that uses your computer's idle time to search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors. Einstein@home is a World Year of Physics 2005 project supported by the American Physical Society (APS) and by a number of international organizations.
After several months of testing, we are now 'throwing open the doors' for general participation. If you would like to take part, please use the Create account link to create an account, and follow the instructions. Einstein@home is available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X computers.
This first production run of Einstein@home carries out a search for pulsars over the entire sky, using the most sensitive 600 hours of data from LIGO's third science run, S3.

I too only have dialup. I have found it very difficult to get anything up or down for BOINC. I did manage to get 2 or 3 days worth for BOINC on most machines with full classic caches when BOINC runs out. I did manage to get driver installed on all but one machine before the weekend started. I expect my evenings will be busy trying to get the machines to transmit in the 2 hours after I get out of work.

We will be having a general outage tomorrow to do a database backup and to reinitialize our replica database server. The replica became corrupt last week due to a disk space issue. After this is done, we should not have to have outages for backups. We will start at 17:00 UTC. The outage will last several hours.

Last week we finished the first phase of the science "migration." What this means is that all of the scientific results from SETI@home classic have been migrated over to the BOINC science database. There is a bit of cleanup work to be done, but the next big phase is merging these data with BOINC data. We will soon be able to shut down the classic master science database, which is currently running on the same server as the BOINC scheduler.

Where did they post that?
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/tech_news.php
The general feeling is that classic has just weeks, not months, to go before total shut down. Part of the requirement was that a new 5.x GUI be finished and that the new Science app come out of beta. Both conditions have been met. The net result will be that Astropulse will become active, the curent WU's will be reissued and examined in much greater detail (2x - 3x longer crunch times)and the new arrays will start feeding data tapes for parts of the sky never seen before in SETI.
I too plan to keep crunching until they pull the plug. I am going to retake the number 2 spot in my class list and just MAYBE get to the golden WU. Any idea where that is these days? I am guessing it is somewhere between 16K and 18K.

December 15th is the current target date. Have a big outage soon for a big step in the master migration database, and then when we're back up start sending out the mass e-mail saying it's time to start moving over.
- Matt
Big outage: master migration (merging old SETI@home classic science database with BOINC). Everything needs to stop for this to happen, and may take 24-76 hours. Don't want new users coming over to BOINC and finding it down for several days. Of course we'll post news items about this when we have a better idea when this will happen.
Remember this is only the current planned cutoff date, and may slip a week or two, but we're really trying to stick to this one.
- Matt
Actually, we might be able to get by without an outage - we're working that out now. You can see why I don't post things to the front page until we are a lot more certain about events/dates/times...

Regarding posts about the "December 15" shutdown date. Sorry I didn't post that
over here - bear in mind that nothing is really official until it makes it to
the news on the front page (or technical news). Though we really really really
want to stick to this schedule, it may slip a week or two. Anyway, expect a
mass e-mail soon, funny warnings from your classic clients, a note on the classic
home page, etc.
The old SETI@home Classic project will stop issuing work on December 15, 2005. Anyone still running SETI@home Classic should deactivate it and install SETI@home/BOINC (see instructions under 'Getting started' on this page).
It says "stop issuing work", no mention of when it stops accepting work returns. Load your caches.

On December 15, 2005, after 6 years of operation, this project will shut down. But SETI@home is not going away. We're alive and well and running on the BOINC distributed computing platform. It's easy to switch over - just follow the instructions on the new SETI@home web site. We hope to see everyone there!
At the time of shutdown, the stats for this project will be frozen but will continue to be available on the web.
Thanks to all original SETI@home participants for their tremendous dedication to the project. You made SETI@home into something of lasting significance.

SETI@home completes the switch to BOINC
----------------------------------------------------
SETI@home has completed its transition to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure
for Network Computing). BOINC, developed at U.C. Berkeley, is a framework for
volunteer computing projects like SETI@home.
Switching your computer to the new "SETI@home/BOINC" is easy. Visit
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu for instructions. We'll be shutting down the
"SETI@home Classic" project on December 15. The workunit totals of users and
teams will be frozen at that point, and the final totals will be available on
the web.
Scientists at other universities are using BOINC to create volunteer computing
projects in areas like molecular biology, high-energy physics, and climate
change study. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu for more information. BOINC lets
you donate computer time to multiple causes, divided up however you want. For
example, your PC could spend 40% of its time searching for extraterrestrial
life (SETI@home), 30% studying climate change (http://climateprediction.net),
and 30% studying protein folding, design and docking (Rosetta@home:
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/).
You can run SETI@home 100% of the time if you want. But we strongly encourage
you to participate in other projects. Doing so ensures that when SETI@home is
down or has no work, your computer stays busy helping other researchers.
Support SETI@home
----------------------------------------------------
SETI@home is increasingly reliant on individual donations. Without the support
of individuals like you the project will not be able to continue. We urge all
SETI@home participants to make a yearly donation to keep the project going:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/donate.php
----------------------------------------------------
Thanks again for your participation in SETI@home.

The SETI EMAIL has arrived
November 22, 2005 - 21:30 UTC
We began sending out the mass e-mail yesterday warning SETI@home classic users that we are going to close down the old project on December 15th. It was sent to all 200,000 of the active classic users by this morning. Inactive classic users are being e-mailed at this point.
Due to the influx of new BOINC users (and the unfortunate timing of some googlebots and other web spiders) the load on our web server was extremely high for the past 12 hours. To fix this, we finally deployed a second web server to split the load. As DNS updates spread throughout the internet, the load on klaatu (the original single web server) decreases while the load on penguin (the new secondary web server) increases. Both are Sun D220R's (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM).
Part of the problem was that the web servers were configured to spawn more many clients than actually necessary, which left lingering, unused threads open on the database, which in turn lead to the database running out of connections. Some users saw messages to this effect when the load on the web servers was at its highest.
This looked like a database problem, when in fact we are currently enjoying a 10% performance boost on the database. Last week we moved some memory off the myisam tables (which contain web forum info and not much else) and slated it for the innodb tables (which contain user, host, result, workunit, etc. tables). The myisam tables didn't need the excess memory.
By the way, the master database merge (see below) is currently on for the beginning of next week
You are running a client from the original SETI@home project. This project will be shutting down on 12/15/2005. Please join the new SETI@Home project at http: // setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Nah, Thanks for the thought though. This version of SETI is going to have it's final swan song on 12/15. As soon as the final stats are done, I am going to post them here as a final record of what the team did. I would say that after 1/1/06, it could be unstuck and it can slide into the great unknown. If any other team member has some thoughts on this, speak up now. The other smaller thread is current and will continue to be used for BOINC messages.
Hey no problem at all, I'm looking forward to you you guys keeping the SETI thing going.

In other fun news: We finally got around to adjusting Classic credit for users that showed obvious signs of cheating. In Classic, it was very easy to cheat the system to get credit without doing any actual work. We ended up partially or entirely removing credit for about 900 of the top 10000 users (all of which had about 20000 or more credits). Below that there wasn't enough data to show obvious signs of rampant cheating (not to mention enough time and disk space to run the checks on the remaining several million users). These adjusted credits should be sync'ed up with the BOINC databases soon if not already. Case closed.
