The Lord of the Undead is back with a big project...
« on: June 03, 2003, 12:14:32 am »
*Cue the Imperial March background music*

This ship has been a fairly big distraction for me in regard to my other projects (now you know why all my WIP's keep vanishing). The basic idea for this ship has been jostling around in my undead brain for months but it rarely got past the "Jeez this sux a--" stage, until now. The basic concept is a Federation Star Destroyer: A big, self reliant, fully independent and heavily armed starship, essentially a starbase with warp nacelles. Something that will make an enemy commander think "Oh sh--!" when first seeing it and analyzing it's tactical capabilities. I'll post more about her background and basic design elements later. I'd appreciate some feedback, maybe something that can keep her from becoming "Just another lousy Fed" and dropping off the community's radar. OK, enough rambling, here's a few teaser shots:

Whew. Now that's pretty!

Makes me sad I don't pay much attention anymore.

I'm likin' her a lot! I've always loved really big starships in general, but my favorites are the Feds.

As for feedback, I like the primary hull, but don't have a good view of the secondary.

My only real critism is that the nacelles seem incongruent with the rest of the ship. Too thin and delicate and perhaps too short. I would suggest a bigger, more robust (armored?) set of nacelles.

Overall, great looking design. I'm looking forward to downloading this beast!

Unbelievable!!!! Ship looks great, and the texturing is the best that I've ever seen on my browser. I can't wait to see it in game. The only suggestion that I can make is to maybe have the struts "flow" more with the rear hull. Don't change the angle or anything. I really like the angular lines. Just integrate them more. It's awesome looking though

Of course it looks like a steam iron, what better way than to make your enemies dry and flat?

Since some of the more recent Starfleet ships have an 'arrow' shape to them (Intrepid, Prometheus, Norway), I figured the Diamond Star would fit in with the rest of the design lineage. Well, that and I happen to like the shape of the Star Destroyers, simple as they might be.

I really like the design, but I have to agree with Kaenyne when it comes to the nacelles, they just look kinda small and weak for a ship like that. Other than that, it's pretty much perfect.

Actually, the engines are already armored, specifically the support rings on the nacelles. I think they may look too thin from the current angle but in the top view, they seem a bit bulkier imo.

I made some changes to the already existing textures (namely a slight recoloring and new aztec pattern, Nemesis style), along with some alterations to the pylons. Atolm suggested sweeping them back farther for stronger support and adding a bit of armor.

For those wondering, yes she is indeed 3x the size of the Sovereign

Manitoba - I don't have much in the way of tutorials as most of my texture work is hand drawn (or is it cursor drawn?), aside from details that need to be identical like escape pods and windows. For those I usually use the text option (those pods are really lower case b's in Trill script) or dotted/dashed lines. The aztec is actually a pattern made from one of the stock Taldren textures that I simply modified. If you need advice on any specific texturing aspects, I can probably help out.

The Immortal perfectionist graces us with another fine display of his undead modelling skills. Nice warp engines!

Just wait until WZ45 turns his attention to non-Fed designs, mwah, ha, ha!

Now that I've seen more pictures and more angles I think the nacelles do look better. The support rings actually looked like exposed parts of the engine in the earlier shots. And I like the improvements you've made.

I do have a question (not a criticism): The hanger doors on the secondary hull look HUGE. What would they deploy?

Simple, they'd deploy Defiants

A large portion of the aft hull (all the way up to where the end of the 'scoop' ends) is devoted to hanger decks, supply lines, and docking bays for ships the size of Defiants and Novas. There's a 'normal' launch bay on the top of the ship where the primary and secondary hulls connect which is used for fighters and shuttles.
