Truespace to 3DMax possible?
« on: May 27, 2003, 06:16:11 pm »
I have some models in Truespace .COB format- I cannot find an importer for 3Dmax for these file types. WIll Milkshape convert from .COB to .MOD? Anybody have any ideas, or plugins locations I wasn't aware of, please post so. I thought I had read that this is presently impossible- something about it costing a fortune for Discreet to make a plugin... any ideas? These are not my files and I thought I could convert them, but it wont let me (I have 3DMax version 4.2).
Thank you any or all.

It's not impossible.. certainly no more impossible than converting Lightwave to 3dsMax, Maya to 3dsMax, or any other program to 3dsMax.  All you need really is the right program to do it with.    I know that Right Hemisphere puts out a good product that'll do that for you, plus they have a downloadable demo.

ateorhaven has the best idea. Although I could possibly add .cob support to CV, it's probably much faster/safer to convert it to 3DS max and then to .mod.

BTW ateorhaven, have you tried my suggestion from the sfc3.net forums? I'd like to know if it worked or not.

Zaniwhoop, I tried that CV of yours, and I could not get it to load a .mod or anything- I tired it for about ten minutes, there isn't a way to load anything... and I cannot run DirectX9 on my system, as it squirrels out several programs I have- do you know what I was doing wrong, and is there a DirectX8+ friendly version?
I have some ships with severely messed up hardpoints, and am having a devil of a time with them.

Oh, and Atheorhaven, I cannot find anythihng specifically relating to the Truespace .cob translation to 3dmax... I did get a demo download newsletter, and have to wait on it... I am not doubting you, just curious if you were positive on that... those programs they sell like Deep Exploration, etc., have 3dmax plugins, but what about converting those .cob files to .3ds? I'm getting lost, heh heh!

theres is a few programs out there but ur best bet would be right hemispheres deep exploration or quick 3d professional. they cover most of the types out there right now to convert into .3ds.

Haven't as of yet... do you have the download link for the Developer's version?  There's about three or four versions up there, and I'm not sure which one that you're referring to exactly..

I JUST came here to post that I had found the exact program- Deep Exploration, that will import .cob and export to .3ds. Aethoerhaven, has anyone told you 'you're the man' lately?!? Hope Zaniwoop has something to help me tidy up my hardpoints, theres about ten that are seemingly a mess.

Thanks Aetheohaven again!

CV does require DX9 to function. Converting to DX8 is very very very tedious but I could do a DX8.1 version much easier, however it still does involve quite a bit of work. Unfortunately, I have a very busy schedule coming up with finals and all, so it may be awhile. I would like to add Freelancer support to CV, but I am not getting much support over at the Frost-works forums, so I may decide to tackle this.

Heheh.. maybe, but it doesn't get me laid.

Matter of fact, it's kind of detrimental to that.. while I'm typing on this thing and working on starships, my wife is snoring away in bed.  You guys have *no* idea the kinds of sacrifices I have to make to get these ships out to you.  >:)

If you could do the 8.1 version, that'd make a lot of people happier that DX9 would screw their systems up on, compared to doing the 8.0 version.. which would probably just make me happy.  And down to 8.0 would probably screw things up for some.  If you had scads of time, I'd ask you to tackle the 8.0 version.. but if you could convert 'er down to 8.1, that'd probably make a lot of others extremely happy.    I'll just muddle along as I've always done.. texturing on my archaic machine.. unable to run glowtools.. or recache.. or run CV.. (snif).

Well, yes, Atheorhaven, I really do understand.. She always says "Why did you buy that game if you never play it, only modify it, then turn around and complain about what you did to it not working when it worked fine before you messed with it- for a year now? A year. Haven't you learned a lesson yet?!?" Did you ever get that lecture? Wish I could record then convert her complaining to MP3 so everyone could download it. Ow! I just got hit i the back of the head! See?

Yes, let me know of that- I ma missing textures on a couple of Kazon ships thatredragon made, and Korah fixed... they still don't display the textures in a in-game test.

Oh, I am sorry to be confusing Mackie- I cannot map... especially not in Max- it managed to lose my textures on the model for me- they sit there all happy and proper format in the folder, but don't sit on the model at all.... the same Kazon ships that you and Korah and everyone els commented on nicely for me; they don't work again. Ah well, mission accomplished for now. Who cares if the Kazon ships dont have any textures, they looked like big pieces of %^( anyways.
