Couldn't tell you why they choose that race for the doctor.  Never heard of the race before Enterprise.  Probably just another situation where B & B didn't want to bother using an old Star Trek race for the Doctor.

It was an ok idea to use a new species. Most of the ones we know are farther from earth than would be practical to have on enterprise at this time. Plus they have been able to create a new backstory for the species insted of gettting stuck and deciding to ruin continuity.

Ya, I noticed that too.  Maybe I'm wrong but I thought it was strictly for Males.  maybe Females are effected aswell.

It was said that Vulcan males go through Pon Far every 7 years

A lot of people have chosen that to mean Vulcan MALES go through Pon Far every 7 years

But I'm not going to speculate on anything (although a theory I thought was good was that Female Pon Far is triggered by the male)

BTW, in case you didn't see the episode (SPOILER WARNING) a virus triggered it.  She seemed to imply that it was her first time.
