SFC2 eaw Installation glitch
« on: May 26, 2003, 05:35:43 pm »
For various reasons I needed to reinstall sfc2 eaw, after first attempting to use the uninstall which failed, I then simply deleted the sfc2 folder. upon attemtping to reinstall sfc2 eaw I consistantly have received the following error message midway though the installation process.

starfleet command II setup

an error occured during the move data process -106

component program files
file group program executable files
file SFCSounds.zip

use of various norton find/fix problems with windows has had no effect on this.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

I've had this on a few different computers. The best solution I can think of is to find another CD driver to copy the CDs from onto your harddrive and install from there.

Just wondering, SFCsounds.zip is write protected. Did you really delete it?

Maybe the CD needs cleaning. It looks like the error could be associated with a damaged CD. Try it in somebody elses PC. Then consider lashing out for a new game CD from a bargain bin, if you can find it.

I didnt have this exact problem....but...

being a tester...and having to re-install the base game MANY times....

At some point...the install WOULD NOT COMPLETE....it would simply hardlock my PC at random points in the install process...

I tried EVERYTHING I could think of.....regedit....hand "driver" deletes...you name it....for a while.....I thought my CD-Rom had taken a crap on me...or I had gotten an unknown virus....

Then Mags suggested I check to see if DMA was enabled.....it was...he suggested I disable it...then try and install again....

Worked like a charm.....I then simply re-enable it after the re-install....

To this day....I cannot re-install SFC2 OR OP without disableing DMA first....

Go figure

i know from experian that its bad to manualy remove files if the uninstall not working, there always hinding files that prevent you from reinstalling it, the only thing that work is format you hd (try to backup what you realy need (don't backup your hd cause the problem will still be there)

Ah...LOL...sorry

Go to my computer/properties

device manager

find your CD-rom drive

go to settings...

You'll see a box that's labeled DMA....

The default setting is checked....

DMA...what is it:

Description of DMA mode :

The transfer mode for IDE devices has traditionally been PIO (programmed I/O) where data is transferred to and from IDE devices via CPU instructions. This mode is straightforward and simple but uses large amount of CPU time.
When DMA mode (Direct Memory Access) is activated, the transfer is done without using the CPU - the CPU only sends the command to the CD-ROM drive and the whole transfer is done without the CPU's help and therefore doesn't take any process time.
How do I activate DMA mode in Windows 95/98/ME :

In Windows 95/98/ME DMA mode can be activated/ deactivated for each device.

To activate you should start the device manager (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> system), select "Device manager"
Now expand the "CD-ROM" and select your Plextor, "Properties" -> "Settings" and activate the "DMA" button.
If "DMA" switch is greyed, the busmaster driver has not been correctly installed
How do I activate DMA mode in Windows 2000/XP :

Under Windows 2000/XP the DMA mode can be activated for each controller.

To activate you should start the device manager (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware) select "Device Manager".
Now expand the "IDE ATA/ ATAPI Controller" and select your IDE channel, now right mouse button -> "Properties" and select the tab "Advanced Settings".
Within the boxes "Device 0" and "Device 1" you can select the "transfer mode" for the particular device attached to the channel. Change the transfer mode to "DMA, if available" to activate the DMA mode.
You can find the currently used transfer mode under "Current transfer mode".

As I said...this may not fix your install problem.....but it did mine.....I disable DMA to reinstall SFC2 AND OP...then re-enable to run my PC

Like chicken soup for a cold....it may not help.....but it couldnt hurt to try....

Just dont forget to re-enable it...
