Ye Olde Server: Ideas from the back of my lizard brain

Hee hee.  As if you guys didn't have enough upcoming server ideas to look at already.

Almost all servers have concentrated on the General War era.  Taldren tried to add the advanced era with OP.  But there is a whole other era from SFB out there that Dynaverse players have never seen.

*The Federation was not yet united, and its member worlds were still involved in byzantine struggles for dominance.
*The Andorians, Rigellians, Alpha-Centaurons, and Vulcans still operated independant fleets, resisting the earth call for a "United" starfleet
*The Gorn were still at war with the Paravians (who were not yet extinct)
*A canine race between the Kzinti and the Lyrans were terrorizing the galaxy, much like the Vikings of old (and were not yet extinct)
*The Hydran Kingdom had not yet been conquered by the Klingon Empire
*The Romulans were looking at new torp and cloak tech in order to make a comeback, after making big news on the Fed border.
*Novae cannon, death bolts, wave-guided torpedos, and nuclear tipped missiles.

This was the time of the "Early Era", as protrayed in SFB module Y1:  The Early Years, and soon to be continued in the upcoming module Y2.  These ships and this era are a lot of fun to play in SFB.  I?d love to build a D2 server set in this era.  With some clever edits and tricks I think I have ways of making or representing nearly all these races and weapons in the D2.  Era advancement would occur based upon the transition from old (even for the early era) warp-refitted ships to "new" tactical-warp designed cruisers.  (Neither of which you have ever seen before, unless you own Y1).

*The shiplist would start from scratch; non-SFB players have seen none of these ships before.
*The Paravians and Carnivons could serve as new races. (We?d have to make room.....)
*The Andorians, Rigellians, Alpha-Centaurans, and Vulcans could form a joint list with the early earth ships or form new races.  (Again, we?d have to make room.)  I like the idea of allied races and a partition of historical Fed space.
*Nearly all ships would have been built with a different military doctrine in mind, and players would get to explore what this means.

While we call these ships "early era" in SFB, their captains did not know that they were "early".  Indeed, the captains of the early Gorn ships ? for example -- thought that they were the most advanced Gorn the galaxy had ever lived.  (This view held for all races except the Vulcans.  They seemed to rise and fall on a regualar basis, as they alternately had eras of scientific advancement and then centuries of quiet contemplation.)  With ships of a different era?s design philosophy, captains would get to explore a new paradigm of tactical thought while still remaining true to the game?s innate SFB engine.

The question is, would anyone be interested in playing such a thing?  It is definitely different from the seeming current drive to introduce x-tech.  This was the first sever I ever wanted to run, but thought I might better get started with a few things closer to standard first.  It mostly resides in my brain at the moment and I?d like an idea of player interest before I got started building and testing.

I am going to say something that might make everyone go "EWWWWW  YUCK!"  but depending on the congruence of this early era with the current Enterprise show, it might broaden the interest in the server if currently available ship models from that show were used.  Alternatively, any of number of other pre-federation era models might be used that are currently available which may cut down of the development time for the server.

It would be unfortunate for the Vulcans and Andorians to share a shiplist as there is some suggestion in the Enterprise show of a long conflict between these two.  Perhaps it matters little that the server incorporate any Enterprise content as the show does not seem well regarded by certain segments of Star Trek fandom.

In any case, I love to try new stuff and would certainly be interested.  It seems like a very ambitious project.  I am wondering if reducing the scope might help, to concentrate on a 3 or 4 races in an area of conflict and go from there, as opposed to tackling it all at once.   Does this era include the Earth-Romulan war?  An obvious choice, but perhaps a starting point.

AS I like small ships in sfc2 and do not like X-ships, for the most part, an ultra early era would be sweet. The battles in which every missed shot makes you scream "NOOOOO!!!!" ,because you know the next shot from yer opponet could cripple you, are quite intense, and fun.

Ie ships with just a few hardpoints and 1-2 weap types. But this of course is just my own Ideas, pre-enterprise show. I have tended to dabble in writing early man space eploration and conflict ideas. So otherwise ya can just ignore me, i'll be hiding in my hole......

Though I don't think there is a "drive" to play with X-tech (more like a drive to ballance the advanced era so half the players won't leave when it comes) I think this is a great idea Herr Burt. But I'm with Indy, make it in OP please. OP D2 may not be 100% yet but it's no longer as broken as it was. Please consider doing it in OP.

I'm all for it  Just make sure you send out a CD of the models, shiplist, and installer before the server starts so that all of us 56kers can play on it without waiting through a 6-hour download.

Hell, I'd even pay!

Sorry, HB, if it don't have Frogs or Klinks I don't very excited about it.

Sounds like a good idea though for the more well-rounded Trekkie than I.

If anything, this should be a more stable game as you won't have oodles of things (fighters, PF's, hordes of drones) for the AI to keep track of...

And yeah, I concur that OP would probably be the best bet (seeing it has the most races to work from).

I'll play any HB server.

Though I prefer EAW, if there is a problem with not enough race-slots (i.e. the "Viking-like" race you mentioned above) if this was done on OP then could they be represented by the pirates?  I know there is some concern about X-ships, but there is no requirement that they exist in whatever shiplist is made.
