Help Please; GSA problems
« on: May 18, 2003, 01:29:41 am »
Last week, after downloading the latest GSA mandatory upgrade, I suddenly found that I could not enter GSA at all.  Every time I try, I get the message:

Quote:

The connection to the chat server was closed or timed out
GameSpy Arcade cannot continue running without this service, so you must try to reconnect or quit

Pressing reconnect just gets me the same message over and over.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but go no progess.

Next, I had serious hardware failure and got to completely rebuild my machine.  After installing a fesh operating system on a reformatted drive, however, I still get the same messge.

Can anyone offer me any advice?

EDIT:
I have not reinstalled Norton yet, so that can't be it.
I have installed Zone Alarm and have used it with no problems in the past, but have it shutdown for now.  I don't think that's it.

This is the same problem Frey had when Lamespy banned his IP for using the chat servers for the D2.

It sounds like they banned your IP try to get a diffrent one.
Just relese your connection then renew it and see if the IP changes then see if that works.

Is there a router involved?

Or it's got nothing to do with it 'cos you've been banned.

Hmmmmm.........

Disconnected the router, and released and renewed my IP address.  I wish I had done only one at a time, but whatever the solution it now seems to be working.  Thanks to both of you for your advice.  After I've finished my appointment in the morning I'll put my router back in the loop and see if I still have access.

(I'm not sure why they would have banned me; I haven't even been there in months.)

With the router, I put myself on the DMZ and fowarded the following ports:

47624
2300-2400
6500
GameSpy Ports:
6667 (IRC)
80 (HTTP)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6500

It's always worked in the past.  (Behind ZoneAlarm, since I'm on the DMZ)  Cleaven, do you spot anything I might have missed?

You did not need to have done anything a few weeks back they banned everyone who hosted a D2 server becuase the servers was using thier chat system.

Talk about stupid the D2 is supposed to use them, duh.

AHA!!!!  That was it then.  (Bastards).  I guess they didn't enjoy Day of the Eagle.  No wonder my server lost it's ability to connect to the chat server near the end.

I agree, that was stupid on their part.  The D2 was written to use them!

With those ports open you do not need to be in the DMZ, unless your triggering doesn't work properly, which is the case for some routers.

I was concerned that you may not have had the full set of GSA ports enabled and GSA had done something new.
As for your setup, it looks correct, just make sure UDP and TCP ports are checked where appropriate.

Quote:

Configuration of LinkSys BEFSR41 for GSA and SFC

Port range forwarding table:

47624 to 47624 TCP
2300 to 2400 Both
6667 to 6667 TCP
3782 to 3783 Both
27900 to 27900 UDP
28900 to 28900
29900 to 29901
6500 to 6515 Both
6073 to 6073 UDP
13139 to 13139 UDP

Don't use DMZ and make sure you have the latest firmware.

S'Cipio,

I did a comparison of the ports you provided me (and listed above) to the ones listed by GSA.  According to them, 3783 and 6515 also have to be open.  80 and 29900 don't.
