FASA design Rommie Q-1
« on: March 11, 2004, 04:55:41 am »
Needs a boat load of work yet.  Its the last 2 pics after the 5  Enterprise pics.  It is shown with the wrong nacels cause I havn't made em yet       Interesting to note that the pics which I got from a site. The side pic and the top pic seem to contradict each other slightly.  Since it isn't canon,  I intend to take a few liberties here and there to fit my personla tastes.

Yea they like em I guess.  Thanks for the comments guys.  Here is a link I got from Sandman. Thats how I came upon this ship. Kudos to him.  http://www.sub-odeon.com/stsstcsmua/

This ships has no impulse, just sublight class A engines. It is a monitor( something like a police ship I imagine.) It was made just prior to the 4 year war with the Klingons. I am not sure what era that is in. The article gives star dates but I don't know how to translate stardates to a year.  I think it would be good for TOS era and there is room for some overlap between TOS/TMP. Anyway,  I say the hell with sublight engines. I intend to give it impulse engines instead.  I  am texturing it to fit in with TOS era ships. I see this as an experimental ship of sorts.  TOS is so lackng for ships, FASA has a bunch of ships based off the original V-8  that I would like to do and have the textures match the V-8. That way I can get a decent TOS Rommie Fleet.

As I understand it, the Romulans made no appearances in TMP until the 4th or 5th movie. Then there ships were radically different from the TOS/ early FASA designs and all had long wing spans.  The guy who posted part of the FASA manual in the link I posted earlier. He comments that in space a ship with wings would be pointless. It would only serve to provide a larger target. Thats a good point.

I made the nacels for this ship and tested in game. Its reallly fun to play in SFC3 with the banking.  No point it posting update pics till I get further along with texturing.

Just getting back to this. I started mapping it. Textures are laid in for the most part. Hey at least the bird wavy border is in place.   Though the bird might look better moved up further and off the stuts. hmm  Then a few details here and there

hey that looks good but the mesh errors (wrong shaded areas/polys) at the are destroying the beauty of this model

The Romulans only appeared in the last TMP film - The Undiscovered Country and then they didn't show any Romulan ships. FASA went a little crazy with the Romulans and attributed the B'rel to them instead of the Klingons because of an early script draft for STIII in which Kruge stole the BoP from the Romulans, why it would be painted green and be all rusted as a Romulan ship, not to mention why would Kruge 'lower' himself by commanding a Romulan vessel? Regarding the wings in space thing - if you're going to criticise silly Trek designs why don't we start with cigar tubes and a saucer - the Enterprise herself - absolute nonsense so I don't think it all has to make engineering sense.

BTW Impulse engines are sublight, WTF are FASA sublight engines?

Very nice model BTW, I think, I can't see the full pics, just the tiny thumbnails - VillagePhotos blow huge chunks

Nah there no mesh errors.  I just dont have the texture mapping all finalized and some textures are off center.  Most noticeable the side of the saucer. I just replaced the 1st pic with a more recent one. You can see it looks better already.  The side is now mapped seperate with windows. But I still have adjustments to make on it.

Here is ship info from the FASA manual.

From the FASA Star Trek ROMULAN SHIP RECOGNITION MANUAL, circa 1985
Q-1 (Great Defender) Class III Monitor
Known Sphere Of Operation: Triangle and Klingon borders; Empire interior
Data Reliability: E
Major Data Source: Subspace radio communications monitored by Triangle sector intelligence
About Stardate 1/9109, just prior to the outbreak of the Four Years War, the first of these monitors began active service guarding systems bordering the Triangle area and Klingon territories to coreward.   As the war progressed, their numbers were increased, likely because the Romulans feared a possible invasion by either of their foes.
This class is powered by the RomuIan Sub-Light Engine Class A and carries no impulse drive system.  These vessels mount eight disruptors in four banks, making them formidable opponents for rebels and pirates.  It was during the period immediately following the war that the Romulans discovered that the vessels were not quite suited for their mission of support for cutters and gunboats in systems defense.  As with most Romulan ships, these vessels were not very comfortable and did not lend themselves to prolonged duty.  Because of this, they were reassigned to guard border outposts as the Q-4 {Protector) vessels replaced them; by Star- date 2/1103, all of the vessels of this type are believed to have been removed from active service.
Of the approximately 150 Q-1s built, about 130 have been assigned to active reserve fleets within the interior of the Empire.  Twelve are known to have been disarmed and sold to the civil sector.  Of the three that operate exclusively in the Triang1e, one is rumored to have been fully rearmed for guard duty around Fountainworld, a wealthy tourist spa in the Association Of Outer Free Worlds.
The class is named from the RomuIan d'deletham (great defender), in reference to its mission.

Uploaded 5 new pics. Its almost done. There is a bit of distortion by the buzzards that I will try to fix. A couple windows are off.  Now is the time to nitpic it. Keep in mind that the textures are meant to be TOS era.  If no one finds any major flaws I'll try to wrap it up in a few days.
