FASA ship - Durret (for Bernard and others)
« on: April 11, 2003, 03:53:23 am »
Well, this is a project that's been waiting a little bit.  I took a look at the mesh that Bernard sent over for retexturing and decided that maybe it'd be better to attempt a kitbash using existing parts from other ships than to retexture this one, using it for placement of parts and as a guide to the class.  (I'm not an old SFB player).

Also, I've been wanting to attempt a kitbash for a bit, and this one seems like a good place to start (as there isn't a higher poly Durret out there).

Currently, I'm finished the meshing, have copied the mesh and textures back to my texturing machine, and am working on textures.  But here's a pictorial on how I decided to build a spaceship boys and girls.

Finished product soon.. just would like to get some feedback on how it looks from the people more familiar with the ship than I... (also, what is the registry number for the Durret?  Dunno what it is... so it's currently 2222 temporarily)

Nice looking ship. Might have to add that to my mod if you don't mind. It's great to see some more new models coming out, almost like Christmas!

HI atheorhaven
You've created a nice varient of the the Durrett class. The Durrett as designed by FASA has a shorter
length profile on the primary hull as shown:  Durrett Class I like the work that you've done on her and I'm looking forward to adding her to my collection of ships. I skimmed the ship recognition manual for hull numbers and found nothing. Ship registry information is an area that is lacking. Years ago I  started an ambitious project of creating ship registrys for various designs but the task is daunting. I even had a friend create a database in dos to run searchs for ship names and Ncc numbers but to add them all in was a daunting task in its self.   I learned my lesson there are many ideas out there and many interpretations of the Star Trek universe no one is right or wrong just different.  Thanks for creating a higher poly Durrett

That is way cool, I love!

I do have a question, though:  what's with the general lack of curvature in the primary hull disc?  There are so few faces that the pri-hull looks much more oct(or whatever)agonal than circular?  I've noticed this with many models, is it a ply-count issue?

This is by no means meant as critism for this fine model, just a peeve of symetry I have.

If it has too long a hull, then it's not a Durrett..

Soooooooo... that means two things.. we try to create two versions.. one with, and one without the hanger.  That should take that extra length away and get the Durrett that you wanted.  And also create a variant with a hanger.  Which makes me think of something... what's the name of your Star Trek club again?  You guys need a ship?  Want a Durrett with hangers and lots of closet space?

I think that having different varients will round out the class even better after all the more to choose from the merrier.  The Banting already has a sfc model made for it for those who are interested you can take a peek at her at the following web site  Star trek Mod Directory go to the sfc 1&2 section then the federation  and on page 3 is the USS Banting. It was Kitbashed by Hollis J Wood from P81's ships and textures.  For more information on the Banting as a club check out the web link on the bottom of my signiature .We're in the process of revamping the web site so if some of the information seems dated please let me know and I'll see If I can get my web master to work on it.
I'm looking foward to seeing the 2 versions of the Durrett class come to light. Never agreed with FASA that it should be a cruiser that single engine makes it a Destroyer possibly a DH (heavy destroyer) designation.
At the moment I could use more closet space I have  a closet in the apt that are full of Star trek models at least the top part . Just waiting for the day that my wife and I move into our first and last house.   Some of the inventory is 6 Reliant models 2 Voyager models,   Enterprise(A) model that will be converted to a federation dreadnought I bought the conversion kit, and more.
Keep the aft hangers bays they're just smaller and would only hold say 2 shuttles as opposed to 4 on the varient this way ship specs can be designed for varients. Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to seeing the final results

Currently converting this into SFC 3, plus trying to figure out how to shave the rear hull down a bit without wrecking the look.
SFC 2 and SFC 1 versions are ready to go (again, once the hull is shaved).  Without shaving the rear hull, I could release SFC 1, and SFC 2 right now.

I know its tough especially when the fasa schematic shown here
  Shows a primary hull that
is very similar in shape and dimensions to the Knox Class Frigate primary hull.  Which is what i used to kitbash the
version that I sent to you for study and texture purposes.  What ever you decide to do I'll support your decision at
least we are getting a higher poly model that will make the game better. Thanks for all your efforts.

Okay, that Durrett Class ship is completed.. I've color matched the textures a bit better (and those matches are better than in this shot I have up now), and it's up for download at my site..

Here's the release shot:
http://www.themackiestuff.com/atheorhaven/imgs/rasalgathi_release.jpg

Go get 'er boys and girls..

I've taken Bernard's original advice and am calling this one v1.. I'll go in later on and shave the back hull a bit once I figure out how to do it cleanly.  The attempts to date just made it look bad, and that's not what I'm trying to do.    But in the meantime, there is something higher poly than the original Durrett for you guys to play with.

Much thanks to p81, Terradyhne, and Pataflafla.. without their work to kitbash and build on, this wouldn't exist.

I'll try and get this in our TMP mod for BC as well.

While I'm at it, I notice several ships in your pix page that are not in your downloads page. The adelphi, armada,  belmont, Sentry, and chesterfield. Where can I find those?
