Finally! The late TMP Era Romulan Melak Warbird from the RTS Game Star Trek: New Worlds Intro. Movie is nearly here! In that game a "prototype" D'deridex style warbird, RIS Melak, heads to the neutral zone to test the Shiva device, a powerful new weapon, and gets destroyed when it gets drawn into the gravity well of a planet that materialized behind it immediately after the Shiva device is tested.
There are many folks, such as myself, who believe that the Melak is a great candidate for the Warbirds that took out the Enterprise C in the TNG timeline. The Melak is afterall a paramount appproved design.
http://klingonfanatic.20m.com/images/melak_1.jpgAzel was kind enough to not only attempt a Melak Warbird but to send me a copy of what he's managed to do so far. I in turn, offered to retexture this version using the stock D'deridex warbird textures from BC/SFC3 and posted these pics. It should be noted that he drew the original textures for this model himself; kudos to Azel for being so talented!
http://klingonfanatic.20m.com/images/melak_2.jpgNeither Azel nor myself had access to the ST: New Worlds pics that Mackie, SovereignEmpire or DarkMatrix had previously made available at the time these in game shots were posted. I have since found my copies of ALL the available Melak screenshots and have sent them off to Azel. I believe that Azel intends to do a better version next with the additional pics I have sent.
http://klingonfanatic.20m.com/images/melak_3.jpgAt the present time, the models will need break models and lighting effects added to the Melak's he is making but he will need help with those tasks. There is some work to be done to make this model come to life. If you can help, please feel free contact either him or me. I also have the Melak pics handy for anybody else who might want to tackle this fine Romulan warbird.
For those folks keeping score at home, no Romulan Melak has successfully been built from scratch and made it into any of the SFC games since Maggot made his SFC1 kitbash from Noah Wallace's D'deridex. The latest version of the Melak I was aware of, Kleotol's version, did not survive the conversion process to .mod format. It appears that Azel maybe the first to actually break the "Curse of the Melak".
