Scorpion retexture project
« on: May 01, 2003, 08:26:25 pm »
Here is my progress sofar.

I have almost all of the meridian panels done for the most part, minus the detail lines, which are added last. The engines, canards, sensor module and tail have not been touched........neither has the underside yet. I have added an open hull greeble area in front of the sensor pod......I think i might see how it looks greyed out......it looks funny in a red hue.

Let me know what you think sofar.

I like it !!!!!   Either retextured or not the ship has always felt menacing to me  when I encounter it ... Keep the red hue in front of the sensor pod,   I wouldnt mind it if it was even brighter IMHO.

Personally I love the ship, both before and now. Actually I like this version more I think. But, I've had several players on TNZ comment on how much different it looks from most fed ships insofar as color goes. You might considder giving it a lighter base hull color so less savvy people know it's Fed right away.

I could do an even more unsaturated set. I have played with the saturation levels, and when I am done, I will try a few saturation variants to see how it looks.

The red hue is important to set it apart from other fed ships, but not vital. The original had a slight red hue, ever so slight........if you take the maps and increase saturation on them, you will see the red come out. It only comes apparant when it is next to another fed ship.

Progress sofar...........

I am using the Defiant grid as a template......remember that the line details have not been added, so at this point the map is going to look cartoony. The finished product will have hull deflector lines added to the red areas to break them up. I just need to get the pattern down first.

I have finished the base pattern for the tail and the wings, next comes the grey boxes and dark red greebles. Then it's on to the engines. The engines have template textures on them now so you can see how I do it.

I take shots of the Defiant, paste them where they should go, then use them to overdraw a template similar to the pattern I pasted, using grey and unsaturated red. I then add speckles to the red areas to break up the washout.

I am finding that, because of application of the original textures, there will be some stretching. This cannot be avoided if the set is to be used as a replacement set.........I will offer a new model with corrected application points to eliminate the stretching if anyone wants the mesh, and see if I can get it converted to SFC3.

My biggest challenge is avoiding a color that is too red, while avoiding turning this thing into a pink cruiser, which would not exactly be intimidating  When you lower saturation on red, you get, well, pink. I have had to play with the hues to get a more orange red, to avoid outright pink. Avoiding the violet side of the hue has pretty much accomplished this I believe.

This is the result sofar.

Thanks........I can see that this redo is more popular than the last

Ok, I have added the Starfleet Marine Corps text as well as the UFOP title on the spine. The Corps letters are done in unsaturated red, close to standard USMC colors.

This vessel was originally intended as a Starfleet Marine Corps vessel, and I think this flavor is fitting for that purpose.

I will post a new pic when I make more progress.

I am actually pleasently suprised that people are open to the concept of a Fed ship with red armor instead of blue. There was some talk that the Scorpion would never be accepted in its orginal designed form, so the version you see that Lord Bile authored was released. It was very popular, but it still did not match my original design as I desired (in defense of Lord Bile, he designed the textures himself, without any help from me. We did not provide him with the full mockups, but instead gave him a tiny side shot of the vessel, the original draw for the ship.).

At any rate, there will be three new versions released. This one, a simple texture replacement set, A new adjusted mesh with corrected texture application, and a kitbashed mesh with some flattening of certain areas and a shorter nose to more closely match the original concept. The textures will be altered for the latter so that there are three versions of this vessel, the latter two with an A and B designation.

im getting sick and tired of the plain look of Fed ships, your retexture makes it more aggresive looking and for the area it was made for is well a awesome choice

I could release a blue hue set as well........perhaps the mainstream fleet vessel. This is a specialty vessel, and when you see it coming you should know what it is about.

......about time to run the other way

Ok, that was and remains a big problem. Take a look at the unsaturated areas on the main body and tail.......tell me if they still look pink. I may have to lean it toward orange or purple more if I cannot get the pink look out.

I also added phaser strips along the lateral edge of the ship, as well as two strips on the tail and nose, and one each on the engines. I am trying to keep them off the hull, and I think a lateral array gives good coverage, while the top strips are placed to fill in blind spots.

I think the unsaturated parts work.........you tell me if I am wrong. I darkened them slightly as well.........I would like to keep the dark red accents on the wings.......it will make them stand out from the rest of the ship.

Might be my monitor settings but the hull has a pinkish tint to it. I like the style but not the colors. But,what the heck do I know?
I was wrong about the Nethak, looks great in-game...I guess that's the real test.

I didnt like it at first, but the slightly darker one looks better.  I wouldnt mind seeing it in a muted green.

I have to say that green, or even the muted blue used by the Defiant is becoming more possible...........I cant seem to get away from the pinkish look. If I go more right, the model takes on a peach hue, more left, fucia. I think that returning to blue or trying green, or just plain old dark red may be the only alternative.

In my humble opinion. Try greying out the lighter red that looks pinkish. The solid dark red looks good. Otherwise the ship looks awesome. With that much detail it could use an lod.

I like the added phaser strips and arrays all over the ships. That and the darker red areaas give definition to the light red. If there was no areas of the darker red I would see it as peach/pink. It just looks like a less armored area now... If you switch to green or blue don't scrap this one.

I have gotten away from the original Defiant mask quite a bit, and though I was worried about making the hull too busy, I think the effect is good. I have reduced and greyed most of the lighter panels even more, so they only have a very slight shade.

I am now working on the bottom of the hull, next comes the engines.

Thanks for all of your comments.

Ok, first, the original issue.

You are right, the orginal is fantastic........we will still offer it to all who wish to have it. This is just another version if you wish, and it will be the players ship in the BC2 mod.

Next, size.

She is 407 Meters bow to stern, 57 meters high, 19 decks. This puts her in the Intrepid size class on the higher end, a heavy cruiser designation, just short of the 420 meters needed for starship class, like the Akira. She is 81 meters longer than the Intrepid, 33 meters shorter than the Akira.  She is the largest ship of her type ever made, an Escort cruiser battle configuration taken to it's highest power. The design internals and lineage are based on the Defiant design.

This vessel heads up what is called a Strike Group, which comprises this ship and 4 Defiant class Destroyers. There are 12 Strike Groups in a Battle Group.

Finally, other hues.

I am planning a blue hue set, and I can add a green hue set to the list.......will be interesting to see the ship in olive drab.

Ok, next, an update..............

This is a work in progress.....stretching and windows cannot be helped, as this is a replacement texture set for the original model, and the current texture applications are used.  A corrected mesh will be offered as well.

ooRAH!

Alright, you guys could actually help me out. I would like to redo the Fed spear to look more like the Marine insignia, but I want to make sure I honor the current symbol. If you guys could throw something together, I would appreciate it.........

Who better to make the new Federation Marine Corps insignia then actual Marine recruiters.

Also, FYI, the uniforms for the crew will be a Marine dress uniform/Fed hybrid for BC. I will be posting shots of those at BCU.

I think the toned down reddish colors on the hull are spot on Raven. While contrary to Trek Canon, subdued colors are very military looking. The colored pannels remind me of a sort of cammo pattern, which further enhances the military feel of the ship.

Hello everyone, Raven, the new textures are looking pretty good, but i was wondering if I could offer a suggestion...I was thinking that it would add alot more "realism" to the ship if you were to make some plain hull paneling some curved, some normal, and add a new layer under these new textures making the new textures about 80% opacity, then also add some weathering to them afterwards. just a thought, but it makes them look better when the colorings appear to be painted over exsisting hull plates, alot more realistic.

give a try, or i would be willing to help also.

Thanks Joker. They are a modification of a window from a model of a starship. I had to change the coloring, add a floor and change the window shape and such.

Right now I am working on texture reapplication. The texture redo is pretty much completed.
