Milkshape is scrambling textures.

When using MIlkshape to edit some models for OP, the textures get all scrambled up.  This seems to happen mostly with the stock Taldren models or kitbashes of them.  Is there any way to fix this, or are there some models that MIlkshape just can't work with?

Yeah, milshape is like that.  I use it too, and haven't figured out how to fix it yet.

If you import a model and add anything to it. The textures will be placed on the new parts randomly. They need to be mapped. I f I had a site I would mirror the read me help file. As it is I'll see if I can find the link to the help file.

The help file isn't too detailed though. It can get you pointed in the right direction. When I find it I'll post the link.

I don't think this is unique to milkshape. Anytime you mod a modle you create new faces. The textures need to be assigned to the new faces or the software doesn't know what to do with them.

well I found a skinning tutorial. its not the 1 I used  but it looks like it has the info you need. The example they use is for a skeleton. The priciples are the same though.  Probably easiest to remap the entire ship. 1st link is the skinning tutorial. 2nd link is all the milkshape tutorials for various topics from beginner on up. Good luck.

Hey  Johanobesus  or Clark Kent.  I currently don't have a sfc project in the works. If your interested you could email me a ship with the original textures. I  can remap them for you.  I could also take a series of jpg's of the steps I did. Sort of a tutorial. Pictures worth a 1000 words.  I am not offering to texture mind you (as I currently suck at that-hehe) but I can remap the ones your using, then you can take it from there.  email is makeitjames@hotmail.com

I only want to do 1 or 2 ships.  Maybe I can work up a tutorial specific to SFC this way.

btw-have the mesh all finalized how you want  because if you add to it later, chances are it would need remapping again.
 
 My computer got hosed recently and had to reimage and reinstall milkshape. Now it says my code is invalid. Chumalum must change it often. So got to email him for new code. Good thing I still got my order  # to proof I bought it.

The problem is not with new faces.  On some models Milkshape scrambles the textures before I have done anything to the model.  For example, I wanted to  put a new bridge section on the stock Taldren Fed Freighter.  The first thing I did was make it a little larger.  When I checked it in the modviewer before adding anything to it, the textures looked like they had been put through a blender.  The same thing happened with the stock Rom Warbird.  Might have something to do with Taldren's using two textures for each detail?  The warbird also crashed the UTMV.  Is there something strange about Taldren's models?  
Thank you for the help.  I suppose I will  have to learn how to undo the mapping and remap from scratch.  I might take you up on your offer, but I wanted to take the primary section off of an old model, so I guess I  would need to get the author's permission before involving someone else.

Ok- well that is wierd. I think your right, probalbly due to the 2 lod's in taldren models. Its likely that milkshape cant read levels of detail and gets confused by them. I wonder if you removed the lod textures 1st if it would make a difference.

Anyway-looks like the solution would still be remapping. I am not 100% sure that would work because the lod information must be in hex in the .mod file from the taldren models. Not sure how milkshape is reading em.   I do know that milkshape reads Ilumination maps as transparencies. So I-maps won't work.  

Ugh- Just remembered how Taldren maps there textures. Yea they got parts scattered all over.  The easy way from scratch is to map the top halve of the ship on 1 map and bottom on the other halve.  Don't know why taldren did it the way they did.  If I did it my way I would have to cut and paste parts of the bitmaps all over the place.  

It may not turn out 100% true to original but I'd get it as close as possible.  Still not sure about the lod,s. So no guarentees here
