Many wildly unrelated questions
« on: April 21, 2003, 04:11:35 am »
1)  I just got SFC3.....how in the farking zarkwads do you slow down your enemies?  In the few skirmishes I've played, it seems like the baad guys can stay at high speed forever, no matter how much pounding I put on them.

2)  What is the relationship between movement energy and systems energy?  As far as I can tell, there is none.  Please explain.

3)  Is it just more, or does it take a month of Sundays to destroy an enemy?  It seems like there are no crunch damaging methods, which I prefer, being the brainless brute force  type of captain.

4)  What happened to the old forums?

5)  Why are the shields 90 degree arcs, but the weapons 60 degree arcs?  Also, why are the ars so small in general?  Many ships have total blindspots into which they cannot fire a damn thing.

6)  What's the deal with the Dynaverse?  Do lots of people play in it?  I never got into that part of the game in previous iterations.

7)  When I finish the Klingon story successfully, it asks me if I want to continue, but it says that I need to complete the Klingon story, first (which I already have.)  Is there a problem with just moving on to the Romulan story, or will I miss some of the story?

8)  Why is it that, when I am zoomed out at a very large distance in the top-down view, the texture background is a small square centered on my ship?  (win 2K, ATI Radeon 8500)

That's all for now....I'm sure I'll have more when I get further in.

Thanks in advance.

With the exception of Question 4,
Those other points are exactly the reason i don,t play SFC3,
Theres simply no challenge to the gameplay unlike SFC2, which is Awesome in its strategy content

1) take out their warp core and / or impulse engines using marines or targeted strikes with your weapon systems.  or tractor them.

2) there isn't one in the sense that you can't actually divert power from weapons to engines or vice versa.

3) alpha strikes seem to do a lot more damage than consecutive strikes with individual weapons but you're right it can take a lot of pounding.  put in an oversized warp engine so you can overload your weapons, that might help.

4) no idea

5) the only reason firing arcs exist at all is to make the game more tactical and interesting.  in the show it seems that most ships can fire in any direction they like.  and photon torpedos are seeking weapons.  but that would make the game boring because whoever had the biggest weapons loadout would win every time.

6) yes, it's pretty cool.  i recommend Dominion Wars (although it's the only server I ever played on!)

7) no you can move right on.

8) i don't know, i get that as well.

also in the last movie the enterprise fires off its entire torpedo load in about three minutes.  seems they don't have to wait half a minute for the launcher to 'charge up' again.  but once again, if you could shoot off 20 quantums in the space of 10 seconds it would be 'game over' pretty rapidly.

1)  I just got SFC3.....how in the farking zarkwads do you slow down your enemies?  In the few skirmishes I've played, it seems like the baad guys can stay at high speed forever, no matter how much pounding I put on them.

--If you knock out their engines, you should slow them down considerably.

2)  What is the relationship between movement energy and systems energy?  As far as I can tell, there is none.  Please explain.

--Nothing directly.  However, weapons require more power, meaning you need a larger warp core.  When you have a larger warp core, you'll have to reduce impulse and thrusters, making your ship slower.

3)  Is it just more, or does it take a month of Sundays to destroy an enemy?  It seems like there are no crunch damaging methods, which I prefer, being the brainless brute force  type of captain.

--Try Alpha Strikes.  Romulan weapons will do the most damage, but you might want to cloak and make a sandwich during the reload time.

4)  What happened to the old forums?

--They are down and can't be brought back up.  You could look for the thread (it's probably on page 2 or 3) which discusses it.  It is still possible to read old threads, but very difficult

5)  Why are the shields 90 degree arcs, but the weapons 60 degree arcs?  Also, why are the ars so small in general?  Many ships have total blindspots into which they cannot fire a damn thing.

--The arcs are designed to guarantee that you keep moving.  It is supposed to add mobility to the game (same with 90 degree  arcs).  Or you just go with the oppinion that the shields were designed to "dumb down" the game, whichever you want.

6)  What's the deal with the Dynaverse?  Do lots of people play in it?  I never got into that part of the game in previous iterations.

--D3 is like SP, only, instead of battling the AI, you battle a mix of AI and Humans

7)  When I finish the Klingon story successfully, it asks me if I want to continue, but it says that I need to complete the Klingon story, first (which I already have.)  Is there a problem with just moving on to the Romulan story, or will I miss some of the story?

--No problem continuing.  If you finished the Klingon story, you won't miss anything.

8)  Why is it that, when I am zoomed out at a very large distance in the top-down view, the texture background is a small square
centered on my ship?  (win 2K, ATI Radeon 8500)

No idea

Target Impulse engine should slow them down eventually. You will have to get through the shields and armor first before you can do "acutal" damage to the impulse engine.
SFC3 takes' the pirates and small ships' nimble nature more seriously that SFC2 does (too much so) Once you get to play (AI) enemy capitol ships, they aren't that fast at all.
It is a "joy" of varied-top-speed.

You got it. NONE WHATSOEVER in combat. the only relationship is the fact they both use "engine" space to refit in spacedock. (so you are loosely restricted)

I agree, there aren't any super-crunch weapons like Plasma, ESG, or suicide-OL fusions (hehe...) in SFC3. But I don't find the games longer than previous versions. In SFC1/2 the time is spent lining up a shot, in SFC3 the time is spent shooting... it balances out kind of.

Just like single player campaign, but with human's mixed in, If you have high-speed net, download some of the mods. It can be really fun replaying the Dominion War with some other humans.

I don't remember this from SFC3, but in SFC2 I believe that's the spacedust.
If you look closely in F3 view (or F2 on your ship), you will see little floating particles to represent micro-meteorites. But those little particles don't extend forever. They extend just to the horizon when you are in F3 view. And that's where the square comes up. You can turn it off in the config file, (I don't remember the line) but my advice: don't worry about it, once you tangle with the enemy, the square will be big enough to fill the screen and your won't notice.
BTW by "textured" background you mean the misty square, right? Because there should be more "stars" outside that square, even at max zoom-out...
