SFC scripts...
« on: April 22, 2003, 10:47:03 pm »
I just downloaded some new ships for SFC3, and noticed that the phaser blasts come from the wrong places. That is to say, they all come from the same place...kind of ridiculous to see your left, front and right arcs all shooting from the right side of your saucer. This, combined with the desire to start making some ships of my own, led me to do research and find out that this was determined by dummy objects in the model itself. The only modelling program I own, not being rich or obsessed, is Gmax, and the two scripts on taldren for 3d studio don't work with it. Has anyone made import/export scripts for mod files that I can use with my gmax?

Nope, and it isn't likely to happen someone said discreet charges big bucks to release one.
Milkshape is your only option for an inexpensive program to make SFC models, as far as I know.

post a link to the ship, and describe where you want the guns to fire from, and I'll fix it for you.

Its missing model hardpoints.  It has UI hardpoints (so you can see where on the image of the layout of your ship the weapons are), but no hardpoints in the actual model (which tell the game where the model fires from).  You have to crank up 3d Studio Max or Lightwave and add some.  I might be able to as i just found out how...

I'm curious as to why that's necessary. The reason I got started with Gmax was to make new models for Neverwinter Nights, whose file format also is incompatible with native Gmax. The scripts that I used to convert them into readable files, however, were made by other fans, not released by Discreet. I'm sure that lots of people frequenting this forum have proficiency with programming or software engineering, and that it wouldn't be beyond their capabilities to convert the .mod's into 3d0's or something. Ah well...I probably don't know what I'm talking about :P  I thank you for your offer Cap'n, and have sent you an e-mail about it.  Would I need any additional parts to use this Milkshape program?

Does anyone know of a tutorial for placing hardpoints in milkshape?
