ISC = Canada?
« on: April 22, 2003, 07:05:20 pm »
I've been wondering about this for a while and I'm hoping someone at Taldren can shed some light on it. The background material on the ISC uses the phrase "peace, order and good government," a key phrase in Canadian constitutional history.

I have difficulty believing that this is random coincidence - is there a Canuck shapechanger at Taldren?

Ummm, the ISC is from Star Fleet Battles, the game that SFC is based on. Taldren didn't create them. Unless Canada decides to enforce their way of life on the rest of the galaxy in the name of galactic peace, I see no connection.

Ya, poor Canada, they get not respect from anybody!  American don't think much of them, British have always used them for their dirty work in history (along with the Ausies too), and now SiFi makes them look like the next Imperial Empire.

But technically they are right, the ISC concept never came from Taldern.  It was offically a SFB (Star Fleet Battles) concept made decades ago in the 80's.

Well, the question is not who invented the ISC, but who wrote up the background history of the ISC in the SFC manual with the phrase "peace, order and good government" - did someone at Taldren come up with it originally, or did they just copy it from a SFB manual?

I'm not saying the ISC are "patterned" on Canada (any more than the Klingon Empire is "patterned" on the soviet Union).  Personally, I think it's some sort of in-joke. Of course "peace, order and good government" means nothing to anyone unfamiliar with Canadian constitutional matters, but if an Empire had "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as its mandate, it might mean something to you, right?

Of course, POGG is nowhere near as ubiquitus a reference as L,L&TPOH, so I'm quite curious as to how such a relatively obscure reference ended up in SFC/SFB...

And of course, the ISC are from Evil Mirror Mirror Universe, so of course there we've taken over the galaxy...

I put in the reference to POGG as a bit of an inside joke.

No, the ISC aren't Canadian. That's that silly simulator race.

Comparing Canada to the ISC seems strange since Canada doesn't have a military http://satirewire.com/news/feb02/warship.shtml

You support the war? For sure, but which one are you supporting? Check this out...

In order to wage the war to enforce peace in a systematic way, I propose that we invade every county in alphabetical order. Now, can anyone give Dubya and Donny Romsfeld the directions to Antartica?

  Good old Satirewire.

Almost as good as This Hour has 22 Minutes

http://www.22minutes.com/realwrapper.php?target=apology_256.rm

http://www.22minutes.com/marg/marg_leadership_low.asx

And yes, that's the REAL Prime Minister, not some actor.

We apologize for how he speaks. We're sorry. We know that Americans would NEVER elect a man who uses a local dialect. =P
