Windows XP Trouble
« on: April 19, 2003, 02:03:09 pm »
I just got SFC2. It says on the box that it's compatible with Windows 2000, so I assumed it has no problems with XP. It does- the game runs but I just get dumped back out onto the desktop every time. It isn't non-responsive, but I just can't stay in the game and it doesn't play the opening movie. When I close the Bink player, it loads something, but I can't get into the SFC application without it booting me again. I've tried turning all the .exe's to windows 98 compatibility mode, have patched the game to the latest version, updated my video card drivers, and updated DirectX to 9.0a. These were all the suggestions I saw posted here, but none of them fix the problem. I tried emailing Interplay support, but they're not as good as they used to be and haven't even replied. The funny thing is that once in a while I get 'lucky' and it does actually run. Furthermore, when this happens it runs perfectly! Any idea how to up my 'luck?'

if it matters, my system specs are: P4 2.6 ghz, Radeon 9500 pro, 256 MB RAM

Chia the problem might be the Intro-movie, try bypassing it altogether.  Go to the Starfleet Command II folder and make a shortcut to the file name "StarFleet2.exe" replacing the shortcut to "SFC2.exe".  You can find the files from a typical install in:  C:\Program Files\Taldren\Starfleet Command II.  After this is done run SFC II using the new shortcut and see if it runs.  If this doesn't work post here and I or someone else here will see if we can come up with something that will work.  Hope this helps.

Ah, that's one thing I forgot to say. I've tried running all the different executables in this directory already. Yes, running StarFleet2.exe does bypass the intro (it doesn't launch the movie player) but I get the same deal- it briefly flashes a "Loading..." message and then kicks me out to Windows. The program is still running, but whenever I try to switch back into it, it just kicks me back out. The only thing I can do is end task it.

I also tried disabling visual themes, because I read from somewhere else that this might cause problems. Still no cigar. I have seen the game work twice so far, but I have no clue how I managed that. I really didn't do anything special to it. I've also tried reinstalling... I think I'll try it again now and see if it does anything.

Of course SFC2 runs uder XP, but you have to deal with the usual suspects i.e. update your video & sound drivers too.

In case you didn't read the previous messages, that was one of the first things I did. I have the latest version of all sound and video drivers, and DirectX.

P.S. Reinstallation didn't work.

If it's still not working then try disabling visual themes.  (Right-click on you're SFC program icon, click properties, disable visual themes.)  Good luck!

You didn't say you had checked on your sound drivers the first time around. You may have missed that. I say this from the point of view of playing EAW and OP on an XP pro system, so it does work with default install setting except for the start executable..
