I suck at Klingon.
« on: April 18, 2003, 07:25:39 am »
I switched sides at restart.. I'm flying Klingon <gasp!!!>

I know there are a bunch of you that normally fly Klink or fly nothing but Klink, soooo

HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU FLY THESE BIRDS?!?

I'm on my 3rd F5C and it's not looking pretty.  I'm just trying to save enough for a D6D, or something else I CAN fly.

I'm sure you'll get many more insightful responses than mine, but a few tips occur to me.

First, I have to mention it's been a LONG time since I have flown Klingon regularly. Treat this post with the proper skepticism.

To me, the F5 series is a unique animal, and very different than the D-series and up. Mainly this is because there are more rear-firing phasers than forward ones. When you have 5 phasers on a ship, and 3 of them are RX, you can't exactly fly the same way you would with most ships. Also, outside of the F5D, you have to be very efficient with your drones. Scatterpacks are your friend, but if you let a drone wave go to waste, you've just thrown away a large portion of your ability to deal damage. Though the enemy you're facing is going to determine your tactics, for me the main thing to remember with F5s is to make sure I can time a phaser run so that all 5 shots hit the same shield as soon AFTER my opponent has fired their phasers as possible. That way, I take advantage of their usually lower reinforcement while the phaser banks are sucking power (though veterans are more adept at delaying their power drain), and also keep from having to take a lot of phaser hits when I'm on my closest approach. You should also learn how to manage your power drain so your phaser capacitor isn't sucking you dry as you try to get out of range after your attack runs. Just like a Lyran ESG, you have to know when to let it charge and when to drop the slider to 0 to preserve power for speed and reinforcement.

Those rear phasers supposedly help to protect the weak rear shields, and certainly can provide PD, but if you're not using them for offense, it puts too much pressure on your disruptors and drones to carry the load.

Good luck. Hopefully the "professional" Klingons will share their secrets.

Well, you got to use lot's of ECM......nope, you can't do that it's an F5......

Ok, you have to learn to sabre dance.....nope you can't do that there'll be too many enemy ships out there to keep at long range....

You have to use your transporters and marines to capture ships......can't do that either it's an F5 and the enemy ships seem to have too many marines on them as well.

You have to swamp them with drones......nope, no luck here either.....Damn F-ECL's!!

It ain't easy being cheesy.

I finally got out of the F5... bought a G2, traded in the F5, played a mission to get sufficient PP for a D6D, then traded in the G2 to supply it.

Slow drones suck.

Hang in there, Max.  Flying Klingon in early, espcially when starting in an F5 is tough, but rewarding once you learn how.  At least you're starting in an F5C.  Many is the time we started in stock F5s.  That's signficantly worse.

I don't have a lot of add to what Nomad said.  He's pretty much right on with his advice.  I find that it's useful to offline one or both disruptors after the first pass and use the extra power for increased ECM, EM or speed.  If the opportunity presets itself to charge the dizzies again, then turn them back on.

If we actually had a working chat client, it would be easier to coordinate your training, but I'm sure any of my KBF bretheren, or any Klingon vet, for that matter, would be most happy to ride shotgun for you and facilitate your learning process.  That's been an important part of our ethos for a long time.

Ok, hows this sound?

I get my D6D shot out from under me by some evil bastard Hydran AI in a DG, so, I buy a G2 to get my D6D back, play a mission in the replacement F5C to get some PP, come back to see I've got a shiny new Yugo waiting for me, trade in my Prizm, look at the shipyards and see *SIX* ships there, ALL OF WHICH ARE TWICE AS EXPENSIVE as they were before.  So now I've got 2000 PP and stuck in a friggin G2!!!

I think I'll go Lyran on the next reset

Lyran play pretty close to the same way as Klingon, once you get feel for the ESG

I like to remind myself why I don't play some races.  My style just doesn't mesh well with disruptors.

Y'know - people keep saying that, but I just cannot get the hang of Klingon.  Even after (gads, how many?) years of SFC1/EAW/OP I still simply and utterly suck with Klingon ships.

Maybe it's only a one way transfer.  I can play Klingon and Lyran about the same but seem to be more effective in Red.

Commander Maxillius,

In an f-5, your 2 friends are scatterpacks and t-bombs.  Then usually long phaser fights.

In the D6D, the AI is usually subseptable to drone waves.  However, the DG has lots of tractors and phasers.  Killing more than 1 DG in a fully stocked D6D is a hard row to hoe.  I DG can be a challange.

Fighting Hydran AI, remember your ECM.  Get a 2 shift and do not get too close.  The AI(at admiral level) gets to hit bonuses, so don't get too close.  Try to get the AI to fire the p-g at you at a safe range.

It's tough, it can be a long fight, but you can win.

One more thing.  Run away, don't lose that D6D or D7C to the AI.  Getting put back in an F5 is worse than having to run from the AI.  I think you know that now...

One thing years of SFB Klingons flying taught me was the utter patience of the sabre dance.  Some people think I am too patient but that's the way I fly even with ISC.

Yes you are correct.  But only when flying with Rom AI ... the real Rom players are much better.  And smarter.

Unless required by the server rules, NEVER fly a stock D 6 or 7.  They are usless places in the shiplist.  Because of the way the game works p-2 are overpriced POS.  The D5 is another story.

In these Evil Dave style missions, the best hope is you can kill something quick(scatterpack death drag), then hope you can gang up on another ship with the rom ai.

The best ships for klingons in early are:

F5C  if you gotta fly an f5, this is the one.  Still avoid it.

D6D  6 b racks with lots of power  Use heavy drones VS the AI.

D7C  If you have to to PVP in Early, this is the best ship for it.  But expect a LONG fight and becasue you lack crunch power, your opponent can usually leave if things don't go his way.

The E-4D can be a blast.

the D6G used to be a real fun challange.  Find a way to down a shield with 7 p-2 and beam marines.  dropping a shield with 7 p-2 is not an easy task, especially because only 5 of them can be fired at once.  But it was a challange...  Then they rewrote the missions so that ships either had more marines than they could carry or they would blow up on capture(or both).

There have been some improved D? ships at times, but not in the stock list.

hail,

I have spend the last two nigts down in the lower left around 1,37 working on a black hole hex (long live the liberators of lost donut holes!!!!0 and a planet (looks alot like a timbit, which is what we do with donut holes in canada, unlike the unwashed masses throughout the rest of the donut eating mulitverse).

what i have found is...

AI mission matching must be set to like 200% of the drafting ships BPV.

I was in an F5C and got CL's alot (read here about 2-3 as the op force).

Then in a delta 6 delta drone boat got CL's and CA's alot (read here about 2 CL and 1-2 CA).

Then in a delta 7 charlie got CA's all the time.

Summary, fly in pairs, one in a heavy hitter, D6/7 hull and the other draft in a G/E/F hull to keep the op force BPV down.  I dont know if this will work as the only coop I did all last nite was to be drafted by KeeeTAAAAHHHH that freak !!!!!!.

Any hooo at work now here on sat morn, hopefully back home in an hour or four.  At which point I ask anyone want to use RW.  I checked last nite and the older base stations are back up again.  I was on coalition1 last nite listening to my own heavy breathing.  (I do fight one handed you know, and NO its not what u think, the other hand is being used to give the op forces the romulan imperial gestrure, THE BIRD!)

Best advice,

We need wing pairs, especially for new members of the empire, everyone needs to get onto RW for coordination. (BTW thanks to the XC guys for getting chat running, also in another threat it would appear that there is now a way to NOT USE GSA gate servers anymore using the UNREAL gate protocols, WHOOO HOOOOO NO MORE SERVER IS DOWN "STUFF" on the weekends if used).

VC hexes are basically all the terrain holding NEUTRAL hexes at the game start, including black holes (where every good donut hole goes when it dies, watch out for KOTH Kortez (hes the real donut hole)), asteroids (the bane of J'inn's and riverboat casino's everywhere), nebulas (with those nasty gorn isc and romulans behind every juicy cloud), and my personal bane planets (especially the ones with the rings that tend to jump out and kill you when u least expect it, or the ones that are armed and dont shoot until ur in point blank range)  I can almost hear the AI snickering when my ships hull vapourizes.

Last nite  the numbers seemed over all very even execept for the chornic issues of player numbers for the various races.
from what i saw
Federation is 3-7 players
Klingon is 4-10 players (a veritable swarm of klingons (according to the base commander of K7, 12 klingons constitute a swarm but who am I to quibble with a hairless ape))
Mirak 3-6 players (mostly the classic Koth n Kat fleets, so expect a good turn out of the flufbot, sigh)
Gorn 1 or there abouts (where the heck are the GDA guys, common guys ur egg nests are about to be sodomized)
Hydran 2-4 players (TOC and a few independents, should be interesting when the fighters start to shread my hull again)
Lyran 1-2 (good to see the race isnt being ignored this time around)
ISC 2-5 players (good turn out of the regular kemit types, good to see kermmeee is back for more disco lessons and pulsating pleasure dispensing)
Finally leaving our deniable allies the romulans
very few only one that i remember but I know several are playing on SFC3 TNZ server (I was also there playing, drummmm rooollll pleaseeeee, yup a ridge head, but got a bit bored in the BOD i was flying)

I believe the server hit about 22 players at one time last nite for a while, but tended to stabilize at about 15 or so.
