Question:

If I could restore the chat to the server, would you want me to?

There is a downside...restoring the chat using another server could cause crashes to desktop.  So we are trying it in the testing phase.  If it gets too bad, I will reverse the change I made.  FYI.

Have you given irc.krono.net a try?

Frey and I are working on the chat right now, maybe we can get GSA chat to work after all, expect a few restarts during test time.

Ok, were abandoning chat.  We just couldn't get it to work.  The db will be reset in 15 mins for the real thing.

She's quite a laggy server because of the identd checks..
.. that and the fact we can't get to the Acceptable Use Policy pages.. I dunno if it's a good one to use.

.. well.. I spent some time last night on this .. and I hacked down an irc server for linux:
Compare the results:

GSA (ircii for most output)
Quote:

*** Connecting to port 6667 of server peerchat.gamespy.com [refnum 0]
*** Welcome to the Matrix firesoul (from s)

*** s 1.0 iq biklmnopqustvh
*** - (M) Message of the day -
*** - Welcome to GameSpy
*** End of MOTD command

Pet: (my own gateway machine, running linux, debian)
Quote:

*** Connecting to port 6999 of server pet.dhs.org [refnum 0]
*** Welcome to the Internet Relay Network firesoul (from localhost.)
*** Your host is localhost.[localhost./6667], running version dancer-ircd-1.0.+31+maint8+noidentd

*** - localhost. Message of the Day -
*** - Welcome to pet.
*** End of /MOTD command.

Logging on to pet was fast, painless.. and didn't work with a D2 server for me. Being behind my own gateway where the IRC server was also hosted probably was what made my EAW crash bad.
Frey will test from his home when he gets back from work. I wish him luck.

pet.dhs.org:6999 is probably not going to be a permanent server: I can't play myself. But this experiment might lead to better things..  .. maybe we could convince taldren to run an IRC server too?

no go..
.. strafer tells me his EAW went 'boom' at his end too.

.. what's different on irc.krono.net that works which doesn't on mine?

I ditched dancer-ircd and am now trying the same IRCd of the kind on the server that rasjnaj found which was working with a D2 server.

So Unreal IRCd is installed. Guess what, it's got win32 binaries available.
I'll let you know if it works.

From my own IRC server:

I still have to write up the scripts to start/stop the IRC server in case of reboots...
Rasjnaj should configure his win32 server anytime now.

Do we have to do anything client-side or will this be seamless to us?

The  chat.gf is server-side. No clients need to do any changes.
