The air was still.
Not only was it still, it was dark, cold, and stale.
It was air that had been in the same area for a long time and not been used. The kind of air you would find in some forgotten place.
The area it inhabited might have been forgotten. It had, in fact, not been used in quite some time. So long a time that air filters had been shut off to conserve energy. This had also resulted in a fine layer of dust over everything. Nothing had been through this air to disturb anything. Not that there was much to disturb. The previous occupant had been meticulous. Everything had a place and there was a place for everything. Not that there had been much to disrupt that trend, but still, the air carried a quiet sadness that belied the activity that had once taken place there.
All that was about to change.
A single point light appeared. It cast a dim blue glow around the area, not enough to illuminate, but enough to give one the impression of size. The light spread. While it didn?t grow in intensity, the area did swell across the surface it emanated from. Breaking apart into several large squares, it continued.
The area was approximately that of a large table. While the intensity didn?t increase, the amount did. A large office could now be discerned, the table being the central desk. The surface of the table was solid and smooth, the displays imbedded under the clear surface providing the light for the room.
A white light flickered. And then another and another. The ceiling lights came on slowly at first but rapidly overtaking the desk, bathing the whole room in a soft white glow. A distant hum started and several light-weight objects in the room stirred. Heat was circulated.
The lights steadied.
The air freshened.
The temperature rose to comfortable levels.
Once again, signs of life stirred in the office.
