Taldren, why is the access required?

Why not let us just run our own private servers and lower your overhead costs.

Many other games with followings that are even bigger than SFC allow this. It just seems to make sense to me.

I think the access server is used to check the cd keys for installing the game. If you have a hacked or invalid cd key, the next patch will make it invalid and therefore make the game unplayable for those that have not purchased the game.  Its like the EA Games servers for bf1942.  If you don't have a proper key then you won't be able to play online. I believe that this will be implimented in the next build of the patch, which will disable gameplay all togethor if your key is invalid.
