This is something that I found at the below link.

http://www.gamezone.com/gamesell/p15255.htm

Starfleet Command: Neutral Zone

Publisher: Interplay Productions
Developer:   Interplay Productions

 Description

You have been chosen to be a captain in the United Federation of Planets or a commander in the Klingon Empire. Starfleet Command is derived from data of the best-selling strategy board game, Star Fleet Battles. This single player version of Starfleet Command is a tru starship simulation. These are monstous vessels, equipped with dozens of weapons, but remember that these are massive ships and you will have to plan ahead. Use transporters, tractor beams, electronic warfare, marine boarding parties and sensors.

Requirements/Recommendations
Windows 95/98 ? Pentium 200 MHz or Higher ? SVGA Graphics Card ? 250 MB ? 4X or Faster ? 32 MB ? DirectX 6.1

basically the direct predecessor to SFC3.  Fed, Klink and Rom are the only races.  I don't think anyone bought it.

Wow, that's weird.  It looks like a single player (no multiplayer) version of SFC1 before the version we all know was released.  The cover art is very reminiscent of the SFC1 box.  How can you sell a demo?  Could be an illegal repackaged knock-off.

I remember this!  It hit the stores a few months after SFC1 and premiered at $20.00 US.  It was basically the SFC1 demo on a CD, and (I think) with a few bug patches.

I thought about buying it for several friends to introduce them to SFC, but EAW came out shortly afterwards so I just bought them that instead.  A few weeks after it hit the shelves, there was a HUGE discount bin of these marked down to $10.00, hanging around on the end of a store aisle.

Actually, at the time, it was Interplay's standard policy.  I think it had something to do with large demos and no broadband...

Starfleet Academy was sold the same way.  There's a demo on the market for SA with only the first 2 "chapters" or whatever that game calls them...

They were sold cheap ($10 - $20), kinda like an enticement to get people to buy the full game.

SFC - Neutral Zone was basically the demo on CD.  Only Feds and Klinks were playable, and even then, only a small portion of the shiplist.  No campaign mode, just skirmish and (limited) multiplayer.  At least that's what I remember of it...

Can you say "collector's item?" I wonder how many of these were returned by the stores and simply destroyed. I do recall seeing this in a bin sometime between SFC1 and EAW.

I actually still have it though it isn't loaded on my present computer. I got it as a "test case" after a friend of mine told me about sfc. OP was just about to come out so it was an inexpensive way of checking out the game. Needless to say I was hooked. I bought OP then went and got EAW both of which are loaded on my present machine though I have to take the time to get the latest OP patch sometime soon.
