AI combat logic needs work
« on: March 31, 2003, 01:38:14 pm »
There is a couple of thing that bugs me on the AI combat logic.

1) AI going in a striaght line using evasive. Every once in a while. The AI just goes in a striaght line rocking side to side. You can keep firing at it and it won't do anything else. It's just a sittting duck. Can we change that so it will do a short tactical warp instead.

2) The Cloaking dance. Something need to be done with the AI cloak logic. Right now, the AI will start to cloak, get fired upon, decloak, put shields up for a second, start cloaking again, get fired upon and the whole sequence start again. I can usually kill /servely hull the AI by circling in place and matching my firing to the cycle.

Basically, I want to see the AI use Tactical warp in combat. I know it does to close distance but it should also use it to open distance. Cloak capable ship should warp out a bit and cloak while waiting for their weapons to recharge.

Thanks for bringing this up Wiz. I've noticed some really poor AI moves myself. I also wonder why AI's never attempt to disengage when they are WAY outgunned.

I'll bet it's intentional. I doubt Taldren wanted to see a million posts saying:

I don't want them to warp out. But a short tactical warp every now and then can make for some interesting scenario.  Think how fustrating it will be for the Rom to sneak up against an AI under cloak and getting ready for their Multi Plasma point blank volley only to have the AI warp away in the last moment. Sure,  you don' want the AI to do it all the time. But just that fact that it could happen makes for a more interesting game.

I know my tactics need improvement, but does there need to be a thread about it?  Everyone pointing out my tactical shortcomings in public like this is a bit embarrassing!

And why does everyone keep calling me AI?  Must be Fed standard for Tulmahk...
