A matter of size...
« on: January 23, 2003, 08:37:40 am »
I was in a book store the other day, and came across a cool little book. StarShip Spotting, for all you anoraks out there. Has all the major Star Trek vessels in it from TOS to TNG.

Flicking through it, I saw something interesting regarding the mass of Fed starships. The Sovereign comes in at 3,250,000 tons (or whatever), barely a quarter ton more than the Akira. Come again? Sure enough, the Sovvy is barely larger than the Akira, with the Galaxay weighing a whopping 1,250,000 tons more.

Curious, I flicked through a few more reference books, and sure enough, the weights are consistent for all ships for all references. Apparently the Sov is designed, with the Intrepid, the Akira, and the Defiant, to be a smaller, more efficient starship. I guess, rather than being a galactic exploring porker, like the Galaxy, the Sov is a lean, mean fighting machine.

In which case, why is it bigger than the Galaxy in SFC3? We've lost all the SFB components from the game, so we might as well have canon sizes...

Does size really matter?

It's not the size that counts mate, it's how you use it.

I believe you are confusing length and mass. The Sov is longer, but the Galaxy is more massive (bigger, wider saucer)

Well after watching Best of both worlds and then First contact im inclined to think the sov is bigger no matter what the stat boys throw out  in best of both worlds galaxy class is in tractor range looks not to bad next to the cube but in first contact the sov makes a close pass to a cube and in genral looks much bigger than the galaxy well when placed next to the cube i am assuming both cubes were of the same specs..

  Galaxy Class:

Length: 641 Meters
Beam:470 meters
Height : 145 meters
Decks: 42

Mass: 4,960,000 tons

  Sovreign:

Length: 680 meters
Beam: 240 meters
Height: 87 meters
Decks: 24

Mass: 3,500,000 tons

Notice the diefference in height and decks. Also, the circuitry in the sov uses the same bio-neural gel packs as found in voyager.  This apparantly is more efficient not only from a functional p.o.v. but also from a mass perspective as well.
