Ignominious Death by Defense Platform?

(1/4) > >>

SirWilliam:
Question for anyone who knows the answer:

When you inflict enough damage on a defense platform to cause it to go into that pre-death burning phase, is it possible to actually collide with the platform up to the moment of its final explosion?  If so this seems to be quite an inconsistency since it is impossible to collide with a platform that isn't "dying" yet.

I ask this because I was killed when the platform my wingman was assaulting seemed to explode directly underneath me (I had unfortunately started warping "over" it seconds before my wingman hit it REALLY HARD.)  We had quite the discussion about this and I am just about convinced that I actually collided with the "burning" platform.

Any takers on ths one?

Vysander:
never had a problem with collisions as they burn or are intact

Son of Technobabble:
Well unless you were badly damaged and/or were flying a FF, a station/starship collision shouldn't kill you instantly. Furthermore, the collision sound is unique.
I think that from time to time you may explode for no apparent reason (just like the AI loves to do). Once the AI and I just blew up at the beginning of a mision...not good.

SirWilliam:
Good point.

I was in an undamaged Vor'cha at the time.  I suppose it's possible that due to my shields being down from warp, if I were at range 0.0 from the platform just when it finally exploded, that could have killed me.  I have had someone argue with me for an hour before though, telling me that while the platforms are "burning" you can in fact collide with them.  Doesn't seem to make sense to me... but I still steer clear of the platforms now

Anyone else had something like this happen?  Possibly colliding with something that is normally collision-proof?

Belchfire:
Well since I keep seeing references to "my wingman", I guess I need to jump in.

There always exists the possibility that the resulting explosion could take out your ship if you flew over it in warp with no shields up. I still see a a long delay between the time the platform is initially destroyed, the destruction animation, and when the targeted systems actually disappear. Two times after destroying a starbase and a platform I ventured too close. The destruction animation was running but the onboard weapons, warp core, etc were still indicated as intact. I got the "We're on a collision course alert", as I was still headed straight at them. Maybe this was a fluke, maybe it isn't. I will have to try this in single player to see if I get the same results again, too costly to attempt in mp. But the fact still remains until all the bugs are shaken out of the game that nothing be taken for granted and don't fly over anything larger than a ship(cubes or spheres not included) with the destruct animation running until the top left targetting box vanishes. No shields at warp speed would make damage amplification an expected outcome when contacting solid objects.

Off to test this out
