What about main deflectors?
« on: January 22, 2003, 02:19:43 pm »
I think it would be a great addition to the game if every ship could be able to use its main deflector to fire (or emit, sorry but my english is not very good) differents types of beams. I mean, tachyon, myotronic, etc, etc, and several more. As we saw in he series. We could set the deflector during the game to emit the beam we want, depending on how the battle is going. Of course it would need time to set and load.

This will add some complexity to the game and will let us use a very important part of the ship.

What do you think?

Welcome to Taldren forums.

When the Deflector was modified to fire a beam, it took a long time to make the adjustments.  The weapon was supposidly very powerful, but it caused a signifant power drain to the ship using it.  It could not fire a variety of weapons, though.

I am not talking about using it as a heavy weapon. But we see in the series that the ships doesnīt have any problems to fire a tachyon or antitachyon pulse or another beam. We could use it just to prevent warp without damaging or to create some distortion to lower shields. And i remember the Enterprise in the series using its deflector against the borg. Sorry but i donīt remember the episode.

Umm yeah we also saw an intrepid beat a borg cube... not everything in the show can be added to a game. If it could, the show would suck

As I see it, the deflector is what's going to be used if all else fails. And it's such a wondrous piece of technology that can be converted to do ANYTHING: From detecting cloaked ships to emitting anti-graviton pusles, to opening trans-warp fields to firing weapons etc etc etc. I never really understood what the deflector was NORMALLY SUPPOSED to do, besides being a tool (for the scriptwriter) to use when everything else failed and doom was imminent.

By the way, do other races have delfectors? Or are we talking about adding more capabilities to Fed ships? (I understand that they need more stuff, they are terribly weak as it is right now)

Isn't it there to deflect micro-debris from the ship's path?

Ok, i donīt reeeealy want, but you must accept that there are a lot of interesting stuff in the series. Didnīt you never wanted to target your own photon torpedo with a phaser and make them blow to damage a nearby ship?

I think this is the kind of stuff that will make the game more fun.

Not a bad idea but... I think it would be a bit hard to put in the game. When they made Starfleet Command III (if this is the game you are talking about putting them in) they "dumbed" it down for people to learn it fast. A feature like that might complicate things. (and give weak minded people headaches )

Well, there's a lot of interesting stuff in the show because it's intended to be interesting. Now a game is supposed to be three things: playable, balanced  and fun (umm... bug-free?  ). Adding absolutely unpredictable stuff like that would make the game not unplayable but impossible to code.
