What is it with multiple volley? This is not SFC3
« on: March 25, 2003, 10:02:49 am »
Hello

After a few mishap(improper unzipping), I managed to get on DOE.

I did fly a few coop (Allied PatrolA) with Gumby, SOSAthena and SOSCleopatra either in pair
or even a couple of threesomes (If you tell my wife, I'll deny it. Cleo said my wife would not believe it
but it worked for Clinton).

I was flying SK-A and drafted a F-CL+ (2 photons). Even with +2 defensive shift (+4 ECM), I was hit by
3 photons out of 4 in a single volley at range 20!!!!!!

Later on, while cruising the starlanes with SOSCleopatra (see note above regarding wife), in my WER
(I love Envelopping Plasma R in a nebula ), with a +3 defensive shift (nebula), I was hit by 2 out of
4 photons (single volley again) from another F-CL+ (only 2 darn photons on that ship) at range 16!!!!!!

There is something screwy about that.

I did not even purchase SFC3 yet! How come Fed AI gets legendary officers that fire multiple volleys and
no visible effect from ECM? How do I achieve high angular velocity to counter it?
What's next? Will they be able to auto follow me while I'm cloaked (Doh!)? Will they be able to HR my
cloak that I can't fix? At least, my heavy plasma (Env R) did not miss

Since I took minor damage most of the time, I did not get much pp. I even received 100 pp with -218 bonus!
In that AlliedPatrolA, I was flying SK-A, Gumby was flying SK-L and Athena a SP-A. We received a 'player
left SOSAthena' message, killed Fed-CL+ (took some damage to multiple volley photons ignoring ECM) and,
at the end, I had a report of Victory and a net loss of 118pp. Not including 8 points of repair!

those impressions without fear.

You Bastard.

THis shouldn't be too big of a deal against Fed AI as Fed AI sucks at photon tactics, but plasma is another story.

You "speaker" Romulans should applaud the ingeniuous new Taldren plan.  It is sneaky.  today you see the enemy fire volleys.  Tomorrow the ECM buttons have vanished.  Soon you'll start to see funny numbers on the screen that tell you how fast the enemy is turning.  Next up, a joystick will materialize right next to your EAW CD and ask to be installed.  You'll be playing SFC3 in no time, and itf they do it slowly enough you'll never even notice the slow change!! Resistance is futile.  You will be assimilated.  I guess I should deny that I know this.

The Feds aren't the only ones to send off volleys.  I got toasted by a Gorn CDD, which has I think only 3 plasma F's.  Anyway, I'm sure it doesn't have 6, which is what hit my poor battlehawk a couple days ago.  It then proceeded to volley my wing (I forget who it was) to death with 4 torps.  I wouldn't complain if this trick were available to human players, but it seems to be only for the AI

At most the CDD can fire 5 plasma Fs, but only if it shotguns the S torp.  That's a sweet little ship.

Then again, those 5 F's should NEVER be targeted at a single ship. Haven't seen multi-volleyed plasma yet, but I sure as hell can confirm to photon multi..... damn annoying and it's ruining my ability to make any pp.

Don't worry, Rom AI seem to be getting double shots too. It seems to happen only in coop, from what I've seen. So it's not something out of Section 31(which doesn't exist).

Speaking of nebulas and photons, I am wondering if something hinky isnt going on there.  The torps seem to be hitting way too much for the ECM/ECCM shift, especially from the ranges Losiack cited above. Also I swear I fired a G torp on a SKL from range 0 in a nebula and it did absolutely nothing to the target.  I thought perhaps the hardpoint had been modified in some way, but it hasn't happened since so it may have just been my perception.

hmmm we'll im not sure about only Ai doing Multivolley. One of the 1s t missions i did, not coop, I had my 2 f plasma fire out 4 torps. Lil ffg I had trac was all but dead with that.

Ecm/eccm seems ok to me........maybe neb hexs may have been a bit off. Never fought much with or against photons in Nebula

In regards to the ECM/ECCM, I think it's to do with the difficulty level - Captain level. Now, if I remember rightly, during the OP Magic Photon debate, the ECCM shift given to the photons was eventually dropped in favour of a +1 to hit for all direct-fire weapons. I'm wondering if that made its way into EAW, and , as we don't usually use Captain level on servers, this could be first real time it's been noticed. I know I've seen photons hitting way more than normal, despite a +2 shift against them, and I've been on the receiving end of long range phaser 1 fire (30+ with same +2 shift against them). Combine this with Legendary Officers, and I think that's the cause of this and the multiple weapons bug.

Sometimes you just get lucky die rolls.  Got hit with four proxies at range 20 today with a Defense Shift of 2.

Photons work on a 1-6 so their behavoir doesn't always follow a pattern, hence all the"Photond God" jokes.

I majored in math. I know about statistics. I also know about the law of the large numbers.

Using proximity photons:
I thought that at range 16+, you had only 50% chance of a hit (or 1-3 on a d6). Add a +3 shift (9 ECM provided by nebula) and there is no way that a CL+ with 2 photons can take down my shield (at only 5 because of nebula). The maximum damage (rolling a 1, adding +3 you get 4 = a miss) is still 0%. Even with the magic photon where the hit % is at 1-4 at that range, there is only 1 in 36 chance of both hitting. IT HAPPENED EVERY TIME (3 TO 4 OCCASIONS). The odds of that happening are 1 in 36 to the 3rd or 4th power or 1 to 46656 or 1679616 (about 0,00001 %)!!!!!!!
Of course, with multiple volley, it is much easier.
Without magic photons the odds are still at 0%. With odds of 1 to 6 for each magic photon you still have less than 18,6% chance of scoring 2 hits once. To do it 3 times in a row: 0,64%. To do it 4 times in a row: 0,12%.

There is NO DENYING the math

I counted 6 torps, all locked on me, so if a shotgunned torp has NO OTHER TARGET IN ITS ARC, where do the other ones go if only one is supposed to hit me?

Anyway, the AI is DEFINATELY smarter than Captain level here, as it regularly fires off attack probes.

Maybe the DB clean will fix things.

Heh-heh... grabbed a F-CA+ yesterday... first mission, mano y mano with a R-KVL.

I caught 2 doubled Plasma R's....   luckily for me, I took the first 2 on the nose and the second 2 in the arse cause they didn't reach full charge at the same time....

I limped off the screen doing nothing but repairing engines while the KVL recharged...

I immediately sold that CA.... I don't need to run into too many KVL's shooting 4 R's at me....
