Taking a quick detour. A Lyran
« on: March 25, 2003, 05:39:09 am »
Time to do something a bit easier and finally get around to making a new set of Lyran textures to replace the old 256x256's.  This would be the "conjectural" Battleship.  Of course everybody in the late 80's knew the all the races BB's would be conjectural right up to the point where ADB felt they could find a way to sell a module based on them.  Then miraculously they would become less than conjectural.

Anyway I digress.  I built this mesh a ways back and have been tinkering with different style disruptor mounts.  I decided to go simple, no suprise there.  The forward ones will probably look as they do here and the ones that will be on the two center warps will look a bit different.  The mesh itself is a one piece seamless job and in it's nearly finished state still comes in a couple hundred polies less than the first.

Dude, this is a superb model. I MUST have it when you're done! The internet is sorely lacking good non-Fed, Klink, and Rom models. BUT.....I have to ask: Where's the claws and tail??? Huh? HUH?! I'm just kidding. I always thought those were incredibly silly and I still think it's funny that they put them on the SSD. Anyway awesome model. Kudos!

Yea it is a nice model. 1 piece is impressive. Must take a lot of planning to figure out how many polies you need to make the shape.

It's not a matter of deciding how many polies James, it really depends on the model itself or what I plan on doing with it.  The SFB Lyrans are very angular and are easy to do this way.  I suppose the same could be said for the Kzinti, Hydrans, Tholians and pirates.  In SFC2/OP having a one piece mesh really doesn't matter as long as you clean up unseen polies.  For use in bridge commander the damage seems to work better with a solid mesh.  In SFC if you want a shadowless .mod you have to chop the ship up anyways since the .mod format is basically useless when it comes to seeing the smoothing groups you so carefully make in Max, LW or whatever program you use.  It's only made this way because I want to put them into BC as well as OP.

Quick update.  I got started on the basic hull texture during the conference call this am.

I actually plan on doing the clan that had black ships but I'm not all that interested in looking thru my closet and finding the information on them at the moment.  I have a few mini's that I carved out many years ago that are painted in that config so hopefully they'll show up in the inevitable search also.

Good start on texturing there. I'm not up to speed on my Lyran counties, what county is that the symbol for?

It would be fun to se an LDR version of this too(it's conjectural anyway, so, why not?).

Kick-ass model man, well cool textures too, never really liked the SFB Lyrans - I preffered the TMP ones Thu11s made, this looks nice though.

Night Star County is the clan with the black ships. From Captain's Log #25, if you're interested - from the Lyran Painting Guide -

Night Star: Color bars are blue. Hull color is black, the only Lyran ships in this color. Night Star symbol is a blue disk with a white diamond. On these ships, the ESG's, tractors, and shuttle hatches are grey.

Hope this helps,

I haven't gotten very far as work is busting my chops this week.

The textures on the sides of the warp engines are not coming along very well.

And thanks for the info Kieran.  While looking for Lyran style writing on the web, which I haven't found yet, I came across yet another miniature site and the owner of it had some ships painted up in that clans colors too.

edited to update this pic.

Anduril, if you go to www.starfleetgames.com, go to the miniatures, and then look at the paint guides for the Lyran minis, they have examples of Lyran writing. It's pretty clear, so you should be able to reproduce it from that. Anyway this is good so far, I really like the black version.

That's pretty sweet! I'm diggin' the gold texture more than the gray paint job.

BTW, thanks for the hook up, Anduril.  You the man!!

The sfb lyran bb has 8 esg's and the sfc one has 6.  Just an experiment adding the other two.  Should they stay or should they go?

Started adding windows.  Not sure how many I feel like putting on the ship but I look at them this way.  Cats love round openings and they love to stare out windows.  The determining factor will be how much mesh I feel like manipulating to get windows on the angled sides.  They may just end up on the straight ones.

lol I was just about to say that.

The rework looks great so far. As far as the windows go I think that small groups of say 3-5 windows single deck groups would look best but what you have looks fine.

The round windows seem out of place on the angled hull shape, but rectanglar windows are boring i know, some inverted trapizoidal windows on the front hull plates might be keen. (just a loose thought)

This will probably be the last update on this ship.

I have to add a name and hull numbering sooner or later.  The CA paint guide only gives a little info on that subject so I just may make something up.

A last question also.  On the DN what the heck is the squarish extruded area that is along the bottom of the central pontoon.  It is found at the back and wraps around the sides of the pontoon a bit.  On the paint guide you can see vertical lines along the legnth of it.

The power pack that was added in a refit to most of the classes and probably Pusdo fighter mech links as well.

The squarish extrusion at bottom of hull is the main kitty litter storge recepticle. Change often....

Aha!  So it's basically one of those drawers like you find at the bottom of a bird cage.  It can be extended out for easy evacuation of used litter into space.

Exactly. This is how the infamous "Lyran Turd Belt" came into existence in their home system, forming an easily defensible perimeter that no enemy has yet been able to breach. It is quite formidable, and led to the development of the Federation "Lysol Deflector" in the latter half of the General War.
