DOE: Missions changes coming with database clean
« on: March 25, 2003, 10:44:15 pm »

Some people have liked the missions on DOE.  Some have felt they are too hard.  However, whether you had a string of good draws or bad draws, one thing remains clear.  It is possible to draw a ship bigger than the code intended for you to be able to draw.

Tracey has checked her patrol missions and found a glitch.  A parameter in the C++ code was not getting updated properly from its default value.  What this means is, while, the calculation was still set to center on 0.85 times your BPV, it was possible for you to get an opponent of any size.  Thus a FF could on occaision draw a DN.  That was "rare" given the math, but it was possible.  Naturally, given the number of missions played on DOE, it has happened more than once to more than one person.

So here is the deal.  Tracey has corrected the code so that the parameter gets updated, and is at the moment recompiling the code.  When I take the server down at midnight, we will replace the six affected patrol missions.  (The A and B versions of the three patrols.)

You will need to download the new missions from my website.  (See my sig for URL).  Just uncompress the six missions into your DOEConverter folder, run the FromDOE shell and then run the ToDOE shell.  I'll post within this thread when the new download is ready.  You should be able to get it and install it even before I am done cleaning the database.

Hopefully, this will fix the severe mismatching that some people have experienced.  You average draw over 100 missions should remain the same, but no more FF's drawing DN's.  My apologies for the discomfort some have felt up until now!

WHAT A BUNCH OF STATESMAN SPEAK!!!

Here's the real story.

It's Fluf's fault.

Tracey is trying to fix the havoc Fluf caused to the mission scripts.   It's a tough battle but with luck and a chalk pentagram on the floor beneth her to hold off the "Fluf Effect"  we may have a chance.

HHHEEEEYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Barbarian!

Server  Update:
We're not going to make the half-hour mark, folks.  Tracey is compiling her little heart out, and I will get the new stuff to you just as soon as I can.  Promise.  Watch this space if you don't feel that you need to head to bed in the next hour anyway.

UPDATE:

The missions have been recompiled, and are uploading now.  I will post another note here when they are done uploading and then you will be able to download them.  All you will need to do is downoad the new mission bit (very small, only six missions and the current shiplist) and then unzip the contents into your DOE_Converter folder.  Run the FromEagle and then the ToEagle shell and you should be all set to log back in.

Thanks again for your patience.  Hopefully this will decrease the number of times you get a bad draw.  The random number means you will be outmatched from time to time (just like in standard Taldren missions all the way back to Articfire; sometimes you jus gotta run).

OK, the new missions are up!!!!  Go get 'em!!!!!

You will only need the (very) small missions update.  Cable takes 5 seconds to download.  Save to your desktop, then unzip the contents into your DOE_Convert folder.  You will need to let winzip overwrite all 8 files.  Double-click to run the FromEagle script.  Then double-click to run the (new) ToEagle script.  Then you are set!

Happy (I hope) warmongering!

Well I am glad to hear that what I went through last night was an error in the mission scripts.    I was a little bent last night after facing a steady stream of CCHs and BCH in a CL.   I'll log on when I can and give it a swing.

Thanks for all your work Herr Burt.
