Making th switch from SFC2 to SFC3....
« on: March 27, 2003, 06:12:42 pm »
Having owned and played SFC1 and 2, I am sort of considering getting SFC3..... I have a few probs with it though... My main one being "I dont like TNG era gaming".... So, what do I do with all my extra SFC2 ships, are they compatible and do I have to DL them all again....... And why only 4 races???..... hmm

Is it really much better......?

On the plus side, cloaking devices are actually "worth it" now and you can move backwards

I do not have SFC3. I do know that the ships have to be converted to work in SFC3.  Some have been converted already but they are kinda scattered all over on various sites.  There are some mods out there but I think there all TNG era.

So yea you kinda have to D/l them all over or learn how to convert them.  The one thing I have heard is this game is geared for online play as it has very few missions in single player.

The gameplay is MUCH more shallow.

No seeking weapons of any kind, and the 'customizable'-ness of ships really makes all the battles bland.  Each and every mission becomes an exercise in 'close and hose' and that's really all there is to it.

Worse, because of the weird 60 degree weapon arcs, all the ships just end up closing and spinning like tops to bring weapons to bear.

I think Taldren recognized the blandness of this tactic, and so tried to make close battles undesirable by having the 'angular velocity' (IE, how quickly the ships are moving across each others bow, basically) be a HORRIBLE penalty to hit.  Of course, the easy solution to this is to just tractor the enemy ship.

Yeah, only 4 races makes it even more bland, but, honestly, given how little difference there is between any of them now, I don't see how adding any more would have made any difference.

Get SFC3, patch it up, play the single player campaigns, and then download the TNZ mod and play on The Neutral Zone. I've never heard a complaint from anyone playing my mod that the game is too bland. At any rate, by buying a copy of SFC3, you'd be supporting the great company that made all the SFC games in the first place. Nothing wrong with that.

Really?  How did you change the weapons to make them more dynamic?  And, gave each ship or race more exotic weapons arcs?

I was not aware such a mod was in the works, were could one read details of what you changed?
