As another SFC1/2 vet, I'll tell you it is quite different.  It is definitely in need of a patch, but there is one in the works (or so it seems).  Tactics seem to be a bit more general across the board, rather than race specific.  Ships have fewer hull designs, but are customizable in every respect (weapons, computers, sheilds, engines, etc.).  I have only had it for a couple of weeks, so these are just first impressions.  If the price is not a consideration in your budget,  I'd say buy it and see what develops as it is patched and the dynaverses mature. Hope I helped.

the Dyna3 is much better than Dyn2. (although SERIOUSLY lacking in mission variety. and since no SFC3 programming API,  not fan-created missions)
But the new "fleeting" features and the ability to see who you are attacking are very nice.

As a SFC1/2 fanatic, I have to say the combat tactical options are not as evident in SFC3 as SFC2. Battle are fought in the spacedock depending on who can customize the ship best.

As for single player... well who needs singleplayer?

Since you are an old SFC'er, you know about taldren's patching rituals... so I won't go into it again...

over all, it would HELP A WHOLE LOT if you don't think of it as an sequel to SFC2. It's more of a Spin-off to SFC2, whose difficulty level is between SFC2 and BridgeCommander.

If you like TNG, or dislike SFB-- GET SFC3 right away!
If you like SFB/SFC-- wait for demo.
If you like both-- get it, but read the store return policy.

I think I remember reading something about the mission variety being related to the rank bug. If that happened to be the case, the patch should "unlock" more missions...not too sure though.

That's hard to say.  Why did you enjoy SFC 2?  SFC 3 is very different.  If you like many of the complexities such as the ECM/ECCM, varieties of different types of weapons (missiles, plasma, etc) and just the great gigantic differences between them, and the basic similarities between SFB and SFC, then you just might not like SFC3.

If you liked the basic format of the SFC series, like TNG, and like to be able to play a game where you decide what weapons, shields, and other systems your ship carries, then you might love SFC3.

If you don't fall into either one, I'd say, perhaps.  You might want to try it out on a rent a game system first, but if you have spare money or chunk change around in the amount of $50, then yes, give it a shot.

I used to play SFC(1) before SFC3 came out.  I jumped on it and played it like crazy for a month and a half.  But then the lack of . . . something . . . caused me to lose interest.  I went back to playing SFC and after having to re-learn how to play that game (not interface but strategy, when I played SFC3 I more or less lost my SFC edge because of the lack of SFC's "finesse" for lack of a better work) have been playing SFC for the last month.

If I were you and can get it from an Elbo or something with a generous return policy, I would.  Or if you can see it at a friend's house, then do it.  But don't get it from somewhere to which you can't take it back.  If you can't get it from such a place, then I would say not to get it.

Played SFC1 & 2, think of SFC3 as a "lite" version. Jump in for a quick shootout and then walk-away.
Pro: Controls are easier to handle, ship customization (without having to rely on Mods) and crew roster (more detail than SFC1) are a great plus, short warping gives a bit of twist (wish there were just some missiles to run from).
Con: Knowing the tactics of different enemies doesn't seem as important in this one, no missiles, no fighters, no weasels.

If they could just put the SFC3 ship customization and crew roster into SFC2, that would be a game.

@son if technobabble:

i am sorry to destroy your illusions, but a quick look in the "asstes/scripts" folder shows only 8 dynaverse (meta) scripts there. to get more missions, additional scripts will be needed there.

Hiya BlackJackal- long time no see

I still remember you from your SHG days. Your old boss eventually took up the reigns of iCoP, and I served with him there for a couple months. As far as the game is concerned, It certainly is a different animal. Like comparing a tiger to a panther. You'd feel right at home with the controls for the most part, but the game play, and all the features are quite different at base level. It's still a cat, just behaves different and looks different.

Anyway, nice to see ya again, & GH!

I tried getting into Mayfield's original SFB, but at the age of 14 and not having much of an allowance, nor friends even remotely interested in such gaming, I had to give up the endeavor.

Fast forward a few decades... I bought SFC1 and SFC2... skipped OP.  Game complexity was just a bit too overwhelming for someone who had never truely gotten into SFB paper-and-pencil style, so I dropped both games off my PC.  I went back to Quake1-3 and Mechwarrior1-4. Then SFC3 finally arrived.  There was still a learning curve, but no where near the original SFC's 1 + 2.  Eye candy of the defiant and sovereign really appealed to me, so I decide to give SFC3 a fair shot.

So far, I enjoy SFC3's ship customizations since I come from a MechWarrior background.  Yes, the game is buggy, but it simulates TNG combat more accurately than what I observed in the 1st two versions.

I would still like to see race-specific weapons, missles, hellbores, gattling phasers, ESD's/ESG's, tracking plasma torpedos, and other special weaponry enter the scene.  At the same time, I won't miss micromanagement subsystems like ECM's and impulse speed power variations.

More races, ship hull variety, and wider mission selections would be nice.  Until then, we can only wait...
