It's actually a pretty simple method.

-Start out with your texture (For best results, use a 512x512 or 1024x1024 size and rescale it later).

-Go to the preset shapes option and select the circle and draw it on the map.

-Select the text option and move the cursor over the circle to where it turns into an A with a curve.

-Click on it, then type in your text making sure to adjust the "Leading" so the registry expands outwards or inwards.

-Hit "OK" when finished, then go to "Layers" and hit "Convert to Raster Layer" and select the circle and delete it.

The above works fine for the bottom regs, and if you want top regs, simply mirror the circle *before* adding the text.

You can tamper around with the settings, circle size, font type, etc. and get various results and improve your techniques.

I'll be damned! WZ, do you use PSP as well? I thought I was the only person seriously using PSP. lol
I thought everyone else (serious or not) was using Photoshop.

Rhaz, if you're looking for a simple way to make that non-canon red outline on TMP ships we all seem to like, do this:
  • Do what WZ says to get everything positioned right
  • Make sure the text is big enough that the black outline is not touching the body of the number (you may have to blow up the image)
  • Set the magic wand to  All Opaque.
  • Use the magic wand to select all the black outlines (hold down shift to make multiple selections).
  • If the text has been converted to a raster layer, you should be able to flood fill the selections with a red or maroon color.
  • Resize the image back to original size if you blew it up.....otherwise.......
  • Your'e done!!

Thanks guys - you (seem) to have answered all of the questions I had at the moment.  Hopefully I can give this a try tomorrow.
