I don't know what the law in Canada is, but in my country it's legal to make a safety copy of any media you own, be it music, games or movies.
The law doesn't say however, if the safety copy have to come from the cd you bought or it can be made of a friends cd.
This law overrides anything, the publisher of it, might have to say about it, e.g. the fancy no-good eula and so on.

Despite all this, you will still have to overcome the cd-in-drive issue.

Which btw that is being look into, if it's legal, to force, people to have a orginal cd in the drive, when it is legal to make a safety-copy and only use that, so to minimise any damage there might be done, to the orginal cd.
They are also looking into anti-copy protection, which stops you, in making a full legal safety-copy (lol anticopy protection illegal !  what a day that would be ), which in short means that it's legal to own and use anti-"anticopy-protection" hard-/soft-ware

Screw the law, if you payed for the game your gona be playing it!!!

Here is what you do:

Option one:

You have valid cd key so you can phone up Activision and they should be able to organise a replacment CD. This is of course as you can provide proof of purchase, expect to pay P&P though. Dont let them fob you off, they said they would do this!

Option two:

Make a copy of your friends CD, Ive made a copy of my CD, onto my hard drive, and used Alcohole 120% and its nice emulation system to allow me to use it as if it was a normal CD. The only problem I had was that I need the physical CD in the drive to install the patch which was odd. However, I recomend using this program, make a copy of your friends CD either way. If you use the right copy program (whatever that is) you can use the physical CD or use Alcohole 120% as suggested, copying onto the hard drive.

Only problem may be, I havnt tried installing the patch with a physical copy, this may or may not work. If it dosnt you can use your friends CD to install the patch (real one). Then you can continue to run it from your hard drive forever (erm sorta).

This program is downloadable from all good ftp sites!

Hope this helps.

Gah!

I hate it when that happens!

My PC was fried by a power surge and when my insurers replaced it, they took away the old box.

Little did I realise, that in the CD drive, was my Starfleet Command II CD!

I loved that game.  I couldn't even play online, but I still loved it.

Thankfully I now have SFC III to get my "Starfleet Fix" from.

(People who can't beleive I actually compared SFC II to SFC III, keep it to yourselves... Now's not the time).

I can play online with this, so I'm surviving.

Hope everything works out for you.

This game doesn't have any copy protection, just a CD-check.  You should have an easy time copying it.

Consider this a moral issue more than anything.  Do YOU care if you copy it?  I didn't think so...

Yes but its a crafty CD check, hence the need for an emulator if running from a none real cd drive, its also the most efficient way of running any game which requires the cd for any amount of time. Reinstalls take half the time and its legal, to make one back up copy! If you have the cd key and proof of purchase this should surely be enough.

Personaly I dont agree with piracy or more specificaly mass piracy, this tends to be damaging to an industry. But Ive just installed a copy of Adobe Premier 6.5, yes I have to put up with a missing .dll file, and no i didnt pay for it, how could I? Im only a poor student, really despite the fancy computer I need to do one piece of coursework and I want to use Adobe as this will make things easier. Do you really expect me to go out and buy it for one piece of work!? I consider this, "borrowing", and will probably free up hard drive space later by deleting this rather large program.

However its not ok, to pirate 1000's of mp3's and computer games and DVD's. People who get all shirty about one little infraction or two really should worry about the growing mass pirate problem, where everything they have are copies, this is wrong and it does cost the industry money. One day people like them could be the download er downfall of the industry!

Peace out..... doods
