D2 servers and firewalls- a question
« on: January 31, 2003, 02:42:56 pm »
I have heard that it is not possible to connect to D2 servers if you are behind a firewall.  I have tried on several occasions to connect to EAW and OP servers without success, although I have no problem connecting to D3 servers. Running Norton Personal Firewall, so it is configurable but that hasn't seemed to help the problem.  Can anyone confirm this problem and why it should be true?

Configuration of LinkSys BEFSR41 for GSA and SFC

Port range forwarding table:

47624 to 47624 TCP
2300 to 2400 Both
6667 to 6667 TCP
3782 to 3783 Both
27900 to 27900 UDP
28900 to 28900
29900 to 29901
6500 to 6515 Both
6073 to 6073 UDP
13139 to 13139 UDP

Don't use DMZ and make sure you have the latest firmware.

I had a hell of a time with this until I put my DLink router on DMZ.  It would not work no matter what I did with the ports, until I put it on DMZ.  As for my firewall, it has presented no problems whatsoever; once I permitted SFC I have never had any more troubles as far as connection issues on my end.

I am not sure that I have the capablilty to configure the ports as above.  Frankly, I have no idea how one does that.  But also, I am not running a router just a ADSL modem, so I am not sure these settings pertain to my situation.  Anyone else have this problem.  I have no problem connecting when on GSA, but D2 is just not working for me, although D3 does.  Figure that.

I folled what you posted. Works great for D2 and online multi playing. Just how do I set up my Linksys to run Both D2 and D3 without changing the numbers back and forth. Can't get D3 to run with the help file numbers anyhow or with the setup of D2 numbers or with DMZ on or off. Ant ideas?Help!!

^^^See Cleaven's post above.^^^

P.S. The client machine must have a static IP
on your lan for port forwarding to work correctly.
(I disable the dhcp server on my linksys and configure
all the PCs behind it statically.)

Ok so here's an update on my problem.  I tried turning off firewall.  That got me to see the joining channel message in the chat box and I could see values filled in for the supply dock, but nothing else, then lost connection to server.   When I turned off Norton Security all together, everything works fine on D2.  So what's going on?  With firewall off, no ports should be blocked.  BTW, ISP claims to be blocking no ports.  Yet I have to shut off all security for D2 to work.  So what can Norton Internet Security be doing that prevents D2 connection even with firewall off?  Can I manually configure it to have no security blocks for a specific IP address if I can figure what the IP addy is for a D2 server?

Well I'll add my experience with Nortons Internet Security 2002, in that I can fire up GSA while it's running, but all of the pings are about 2-3 times what they should be. Turn off Nortons and everything is back in the green. This happened after the latest GSA update (d?) so even though GSA is configured there is something going on. So anyway I turn off the software firewall while playing, and since I am behind the router firewall (don't use DMZ) I think I'll be okay.

I guess what is happening is that the data stream is being held up by Norton and checked over somehow which effectively slows it.  Is there anyway I can set-up SFC2 to wait longer to sync with the D2 server?  Alternatively, is there some equivalent hard ware firewall I might use that will allow me to turn off Norton Personal Firewall?  As far as I know, the DSL modem I have is not a router in any respect.  Depending on the day and time, I can get several attack alerts per day so I loathe to shut off the whole security package.  Thanks for any suggestions.

It's an expensive option and a bit of a waste if you never will have a need to connect more than one PC to the modem, but you could just get a personal router with built in firewall. On the other hand if you do forsee the need for more than one PC in the house then get the router now, and maybe even a wireless router would be useful to you too.
