Need Help With SFC1...
« on: October 22, 2024, 10:22:03 am »
i won an ebay sale for SFC.  the cd, instruction manual, strategy guide, ship information chart, quick reference card, multiplayer reference sheet, support information card and even the "interplay's most wanted" reward card are in literal mint condition.

the issue is with the cd and my operating system.

the cd is the 1.00.01 version requiring windows 95/98.

my ops system is windows 10 pro.

whenever i try to load the game i get error messages about missing files.

any help, tips, advice or voodoo would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ever tried looking on EBay for Win2000 CD?  It might still work on a modern PC.  Then it would just be a matter of dual booting.  I think Win2000 is the last one that only requires the CD key and can run all versions of SFC.  Hope this helps.

i have.  unfortunately it was a waste of money and time.

i learned from the staff at BestBuy and from local computer repair stores that "modern" laptops and desktops have had a chip that is installed onto the motherboard that will allow the installation of a second operating system but will not allow the use or deletion of that second operating system even with a full out-of-box reboot.
so it's just literally stuck in the hard drive taking up space.

i don't want to go down the rabbit-hole of why the manufacturers do this but if there is a way to do it, i don't have expertise nor is there a business at my location willing to do it.

I mean I use a virtual machine bc I cannot get certain modding tools to work on win10. And I’m too set in my ways to learn the new stuff. It seems fine. Sorry you feel you have no options.

Is this modern laptop/desktop chip also installed on Apple Computers?  The only other thing that I can suggest is maybe if you are using a desktop computer to physically remove your primary hard drive from the computer.  Then install a second hard drive to the computer and install the older operating system on the second drive.  Then you would have to physically unplug the data cable from the hard drive that you are not using at the time.  It’s a pain in the @$$ but the computer chip would only see one operating system at a time this way.

If that doesn’t work and compatibility mode doesn’t work either then you might be out of luck.  Aside from building a cheap system that only has Win98/2K/XP or Linux OS that can run Windows programs natively, I don’t know what else you can do.
