Battlefleet Gothic

Any opinions? - has a very cool Starfleet Command like vibe from what I can tell.

Interesting. The pace feels appropriately naval, rather than another dogfighting game. It has weapon arcs and various tactics: hit&runs, torpedoes, artillery, ramming, stealth, etc.

The game is definitely interesting.  I'm temped to try it out, myself.

The setting and art style is so fantastic it puts me off, a little.  That should be part of the charm, because Star Trek and every other big sci-fi franchise setting is hardly realistic.  Me, I'm reminded of the art style of the dumbed down Dungeons and Dragons, where a two handed ax is depicted as something so heavy that not even a viking could wield.  I'm just attached to Star Trek's ship architecture, and from there, everything ranks in descending order.  A Star Trek mod for the game would be awesome.  I doubt that it is doable, and even so, one would be very temped to reinvent ST's weapons.  After all, JJ Abrams broke the ST universe, so why not start all over again?

My prejudice aside, I wonder if I could even compete with younger players.  Watching the play tester, this doesn't look like something an old man could do.  Allowing players to team up, and fly individual ships in a fleet would work, for me.  I couldn't divide my attention across several, and hope to operate successfully.  Then, on Gamespy, my squadron leader fell asleep, and lead us directly into the path of the enemy's slow drones.  What was the point in going speed 17?  Grrr.  Operating in a fleet was when SFC really fun.

I've already thought that I might like to plat Battlefleet Gothic as an Eldar Corsair.  Light and maneuverable, they sound like Klingon ships.  They'd take a lot of skill to fly.  The Imperials sound like they're probably fairly easy.  Chaos sound like the Empire, but with a different load out ratio, and the Ork Pirates as a built around a stupidly simple, rush in and kill strategy.  The Eldar would have to play a very long, drawn out battle, risking destruction with the first mistake.  I don't think I can do that.  The controls need to be simple.  With one ship, SFC gets to be a handful, and this game has the player handle fleets.

I still need a new computer, and I wonder if I'm going to have to buy one with some super-duper video card to play this monster.  Does it work with Win 7?  Will Win 7 drive me insane if I don't switch to Win 10?  Ack.  Is an I5 processor just way too slow?

If the effort is made, I wouldn't be surprised if we can get a Star Trek or a Star Blazers model in there. The weapons data might be hidden in plain sight.

Yeah, that is an issue for me. In Command and Conquer I had to move dozens of units -- which is not my preferred style. But with BattlefleetGothic it looks like you typically have 1 Leader and 2 Escorts, not 20+ ships to manage.

Looking a little too small-scale for me.   I want an RTS that can emulate the whole friggin General War
Who'd thunk that Star-castling was the root of all evil . . .

In a video game, I want to be the skipper of a ship, or the theater CiC.  I don't want to be a front line admiral or the god emperor of an entire civilization.  I want a game where I either control one unit, or every military unit in a theater.  That is, if I want to get into the minutia of running a ship, I only want one.  Otherwise, I want to direct units, and have those units fight it out for themselves.  Galactic Civilizations works on this level, but then you get caught up in the minutia of running the rest of your empire.  I don't want to be bothered with developing every planet I conquer.  I don't even want to control the military at of an entire empire.

Still, I'm thinking very seriously of buying Battlefleet Gothic.  Other players will probably make mince meat out of me, but hopefully, they make the Eldar completely unbalanced, so I can beat significantly better players.

I am intrigued by this but I have reservations because of Games Workshop and a rather flat wallet at the moment.
I am alright, it is the world that is wrong.

I will get some footage, I'm in the beta. It's amazing.

It's just amazing. Oh man, I am just beside myself at how awesome it is... it's SFC in the WH40K campaign setting... and you get to fly big ass starships and ram people with them!

More coming soon!

Can you  accidentally ram your own ships?  One of the major problems with Rams in the ironclad/pre-dreadnought era was that they kept sinking each other by accident in peacetime.
