A kitbash of several kitbashes.
« on: November 15, 2014, 12:21:26 am »
I've been a lurker on the forums here for a while, and even tried out the Community Edition a while back. I saw a post about stupidfusion.com and the models available there. I tried fiddling with one in particular.

Yeah, that model looks really good.  It has a lot of detail and clean lines.  Would love to see for of those.

Nice!

As this ship has torpedo pods on the top and bottom, I DO like the idea of the middle of the secondary hull being designed as a double decker carrier.  The 'torpedo tubes' would simply need to be redesigned as launch tubes.  As I remember, Fed carriers in SFB have launch tubes of sorts, so that would track.  Maybe 4-6 launch tubes (2 per deck) at the front, with the 'rear' of the center pod having a landing deck of sorts, which could tie in the side shuttle bays with the center fighter bay - either one big landing deck, or the hint of a tunnel coming off of the side hangar bays.

I'll take a few minutes to photochop my landing deck idea and post it up...

OK, here's a visual photochop I've attached showing what a rear carrer landing deck might look like on this model.  Note that the center hangar bay door is folded down flat onto the deck...

Here is the model file. The textures can be found in the 3ds model packages from stupidfusion. I have no clue how to do any texturing work. I'm an engineer, so all I know about 3d modeling came from Inventor. Most of the textures are from the Einherjer refit, which is the source of the base model of this variant. I think I used textures from the Pitkaranta and the Einherjer V2 as well. It's mostly Mackie's and FoaS's work, not mine. I just re-arranged and copied some parts here and there. Feel free to take it and make it your own. As far as scale is concerned, I had envisioned it to be about the same size as the Einherjer. So somewhere in between the Excelsior class and the Yamato Class.

And here are the other views requested.

And thanks for all the compliments. I really wasn't expecting the response I received.
I think the extra torpedo launchers under the shuttlebays, and the weapons platforms on top of the reliant hull section were overkill though.

And here are a few more variants of the same ship. A bit more work needs to be done on the first, and the second was an attempt to see how many weapons I could fit onto one ship :D I had envisioned all of what look like torpedo launchers on the weapons platforms to be missile launchers.

As far as backstory was concerned, How about this?
The federation, seeing the production time and expense of the Yamato class, was looking for something a little more versatile in a battleship. Taking cues from several different popular design choices, the Odin class was born. Named for it's ability to theoretically stand toe-to-toe with the empire's largest battleships of the time, and have a limited compliment of fighters (for a carrier, but having quite a bit more fighters than any other type of vessel) for both point defense and blitzkrieg tactics. The only downside was the method of construction. By using multiple design components from other ships in the fleet, and thus reducing the cost of production, the ships structural integrity wasn't what came to be expected of a ship it's size. As a last minute change, half of the upper hanger bay was repurposed, in it's place was the largest shield generator to ever be fit on a starship. Rivaling the strength of a small starbase, the shield system compensated for the excelsior level hull strength, and the Odin class was put into production. On it's third mission, it proved its mettle by destroying a King Condor Battleship with minimal damage to the Odin, the fighters proved a pivotal role in intercepting the plasma torpedoes before they could reach their target.

I don't think so.  As a Carrier/Battleship I think you nailed it.  The other ships you came up with look really good as well.  The people doing Star Trek Axanar should take notice of this.

These are all fantastic.

Could we get a version of the first one minus the roll-bars?

Try this one. I'm not sure I exported it right, but it might work.
And no rollbar? Do you mean this?

Here is the textures I used (I think), which are all available on stupidfusion.com.
I have no Idea how to export into a format that will work, the only thing I can think of is going incrementally down to 3ds max 9 and using the BFF tools to then export into a proper 3ds fromat instead of the broken one that 3ds max 2015 creates naturally. If anyone has better method, let me know as this looks like it will take a good deal of time, probably a day or two, to figure out and do. If not, I probably won't get to this for about a month or so.

Try this. I exported it as an obj file in 2015, and then imported it into gmax using a obj import script. The settings for export were a little odd, just used the blender preset with a few tweaks. It looks fine in gmax. You have to use triangles instead of polygons or it just doesn't come out right.

What a nice.... TARGET.

As far as fighters go, I recommend that you use Thulls' TMP Era Hornet fighters that will cut the poly count down and still look cool.

We need more TMP era adversary ships. There would be a reason that the Feds built one of these things...

Where are the equally cool kitbashes for the other races?
