Windows xp problem
« on: November 20, 2013, 06:20:47 pm »
Since a good 2 weeks I got a message that my windows xp might not be a genuine one. I have the serial number on the tower, but no time to call them on the phone.

Is there a way to re type the number to confirm that is a good copy of it? Or a fast way to contact windows live with out a phone like skype?

There should be an option in the dialog box to type in the XP code.  IIRC there should be a warning icon in the system tray.  If there is try clicking that.  Hope this helps.

If you mean the star shape like icon, i click on it, but nothing about validating the serial number. My laptop is in english, but the desktop use windows xp in french, its the desk top that got a problem with windows.

I can try to translate what are the 4 options that I have.

detail for the failing of the validation

buy a original windows license

advantage to use a original version

modify the parameter of notification

those are the 4 options windows offer me.

If I use the phone, I got the service in English. The one in french I have to leave a message and wait. I can't wait for them to call me, I got stuff to do.

So if i get the help in English, I must check with the laptop to see what is it so I can check it out on the desktop.

Windows XP was already install when I get the computer last year, I did have the validation warning last year and after that it was ok. Since I reconnect the computer to the net, I have the warning again. No change where made to windows since I have the com, so I don't know why its doing that.

Windows 8 might be too advance for my computer. I will check if windows 7 can work or not.

All I need is call Microsoft and see what's wrong with the key number I have. I was able to re enter it, but its not working. So I have to call them and see what's wrong.

Beside I don't want to upgrade win xp into win 7 or buy win 7. XP is working fine and some of the games I have might not work with win 7 like a Microsoft game that wont work with win xp.

Windows 7 is no longer being sold and eventually you are going to have to up grade to Windows 8.

That made me laugh but you are a Linux user. What I have heard though is 8 is not like ME or Vista only thing I don't like is you don't get the start menu at boot up.It goes itnot the touch CSI type screen and you need a touch monitor.

I knew that I would required a new monitor for win 8 because of the touch screen ! My laptop is also running win xp, I will not trow it away and get a new computer at 500$ + just to run win 8 that will be outdated in 2 years by another crappy win version.

I want to upgrade the rams on both com and get them clean up. I mean to remove the dust in it, not touch the hd. well the laptop is suppose to be like a pentium 5, but its kinda slower to run that my pentium 4. Both have 1.5 gig of ram. Well that what it says for the desktop. 1.50 gig of ram. Well its a Dell com so the rams are place kinda in a weird way.

Just need a new mouse, I will get 2 wireless mouse for the desktop and laptop, also I want to get a external 3 TB hd to put my stuff in it and make a back up of both com if something happen to them.

So I use Linux.  I've also used DOS 1.x, 2.x. 3.x. 5.x and 6.x.  Also Window 3.1, 95. 98SE, 2000pro, XP Pro, 7 Starter and 64 bit Home Premium.  I've skipped the "duds".  So I dare say that I have used Windows and other MS operating systems more than most here.

Win 8 changes directions and tries to unify an OS and OE for 3 different types of environments.  A phone OE is not suitable for the desktop and vice versa.  The Windows app store is alienating some developers (Valve for one).  The physical stores also alienate their distributors the same way.  Their control freak attitude alienates me.  My computer is MINE to control not theirs.

I know what you mean.

I keep Win Xp and the heck with those patch upgrade.

Maybe Friday I will get my desktop check at the store, the only problem is the weigh and getting to the computer shop with it. If I ad a car, or if I could get a lift to the store.

The can of air spray will not do the job to clean the dust in it. its too much and required more power.

So I hear about linux and i don't know if it work with old games. I have settlers 3, diablo 2 and other none recent power hungry games.

Well unless I could talk to Microsoft like with skype or any other way live would be great to fix win xp problem.

As I said before, the key number I have on the tower is no longer valid.

I wasn't critizising you for using linux only as I know you use Windows as well. What is the latest in linux starts with an F?

@Don I would wondows 8 won't be out dated in 2 yrs and you don't need a touch screen as you can still get the start menu by going control S.I would get 4 gigs of ram not sure what you mean by P5.

As I said before, the key number I have on the tower is no longer valid.

If a can of air spray won't isn't enough, try taking the system down to the local gas station and use their air pump.  It might cost you a $1 or so but it will get the job done.  Just make sure the weather is nice when you go.

Did Microsoft say the number is bad?  I'd wait until you talk to them before you dump the OS.   However it does sound like you need to actually get them on the phone for this one.  I know that stinks, but spending a day on the phone might just be worth it if you want to stay with WinXP IMHO.

P5 is for Pentium 5 or Pentium M.

I don't remember what is says, but when I enter the key number I have on the tower It was not good since it did not fix the problem.

To fix the problem I will need to have access to both computer at the same time. This one, the desktop got windows in french and the laptop got it in English. Its the desktop who got a problem with windows. I check for the help in french but last time it was "leave a message and we will call you back" The problem is I can't wait for them to call don't know when, got stuff to do. So I must use the help in english, by doing so I must check the laptop to see what is what since it wont have the same name. I mean  that I can translate the name to french, but it wont be the right word since the french version use another name for the application.

So I taught that Linux was a free software?

I don't know why its doing that.

Maybe you have changed something in the hardware...  Like a disk, memory, etc. That probem with xp happened a lot of times when i updated the hardware and reinstalled the XP. I solved it by using the phone. And it inly taked a few minuts to fix it. Just pay attenction to the fact that the phone numbers that they give in XP may not vê updated. Im my case i seached for the right numbers in their webpage support. Got no complaiins about it

Well that computer was stored since august and was back on the net in November, Its then that Microsoft tell me that windows might not be a good one.

I don't think that connecting a HD on a usb port would cause that?

Not sure if windows was installed on that HD or not. But it did not boot with the HD connected to it. It should not be affected by it.
