Trackball mice
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:10:49 pm »
My Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman is starting to show its age. Much to my dismay Logitech appears to have discontinued this model which I prefer. I would appreciate suggestions for the eventual replacement. This is irritating, MS dropped the Trackball Explorer and now this.

Are you a thumb or fingertip user?

Seems you'd have a better selection with fingertip use. I thumb it so can't offer any good recomendations, sorry.

I have used thumb in the past but prefer finger. I fear I am going to have to make compromises, from what I can see of what is out there I don't like what I see.

I, too, prefer fingertip-directed trackball mice. I had no success in finding a good model. (I very much dislike thumb-directed models.) Fortunately, I found my 1999 corded optical Logitech trackball that still works well.

I do have to clean it once in a while.

I'll ask a dumb question: Have you taken yours apart to see if anything is smudged or loose?

My local PC dealer had wireless optical vertical mice to try out. They are an interesting alternative -- like holding a old-fashioned wood planer. I don't remember the make or model.

I blew it out as much as I could without taking it apart. The left click button is starting to act up, the micro-switch is wearing out. Why is it when I really like a certain model of something the manufactures either change it or stop making it?

Disconnect the mouse from power.
Remove the ball.
using glass cleaner, squirt the ball, and those ball bearing like things.  usa a small brush or rag to get rid of any crusty stuff.
squirt the little window where the laser sees your trackball.
Dry with rag
Dry with blow dryer.
wait a few hours.

Should work fine.

I'm a huge fan of the Logitech Marble Mice.  I have multiple marble mice, one for each computer & laptop.

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs

I mouse left handed, and they don't make many left handed trackball mice to begin with, but the Marble Mouse suits my need perfectly, due to it's 'universal' design.

I got one of those from TarMinyatur. I am still getting used to not having a scroll wheel.
