SFC Setup.exe fix for Windows 7.
« on: February 14, 2013, 03:52:08 am »
First of all I am Edward.   I  always had an interest in the SFC  area.  In fact, I have SFC Gold, SFC EAW, and SFC OP.  Up until recently, my computer just ran XP, but after my hardware upgrade, I am now running both XP and Windows 7 64.  I decided to dual boot both XP and Windows 7 in case I would have games that would not run under Windows 7.  I recently decided to try to reinstall SFC under Windows 7, but guess what?  The setup routine would not run at all and this was confirmed by other posts that indicated the same issue.  I do have XP and is currently installed under XP, but why not Windows 7?

I tried all the usual compatibility settings with no luck.  After thinking about it, I remembered that Microsoft has the  "Application Compatibility Toolkit".  I tried this and the setup process that would not run under Windows 7 now runs.  The only fix I applied was the compatibilty fix using XP SP3.  The normal fix w/o this software would not work, but using the software works??  After reading through many posts on this issue, the above software item was never mentioned so I hope I helped in this area.

Unfortunately, no matter what compatibility options I chose and this is including running as admin, the setup process would not run.   Evidently there is something about my set up that prevented it from running.  The above toolkit made it possible to install under Windows 7.

You might want to do fresh install delete the game folder first. When you install open your disk click on set up as Admin and let it install from there. Then you patch up and away you go.The right compatiblity is Win XP service packs 3.

I have a solution to your problem,I also had the same problem

(1)Download VMWare Player its freeware,Its basically lets you run an OS from within an OS,
(2)Get a copy of Ubuntu (Also Free) and the red wine app (also free) or a copy of XP

Please don't give this type of advice out as SFC does work in win 7 as I posted.

What I did for the old ST games (ST:EF2 and earlier)
1. Install them in a WinXP PC
2. depending on the game, zip the folder or copy the folder to another external HDD.
3. export registry. Most ST games can run without registry, but just export in case you need it.
On the Win7 PC:
1. copy the game folder to your HDD
2. run the game.
Some games need specific tweak to work. But all SFC games just work fine. Compatibility mode is not required, at least on x64.

SFC1 need registry so that you run sfc.exe and the intro will play. If you don't care, just run Starfleet.exe.

I know this is an old thread, but don't run SFCsetup.exe, but rather setup.exe directly.  That will work much better.

I finally decided to load up SFC OP on my aging Win 7 machine and what Age suggested worked just fine.  Played single player for about 2 hours.  Forgot how addicting this game was.

Now if I can just get multiplayer to work (and there are actually servers out there) I'd be in business.
