I can't get it to go.

I've also sort of cross-posted in Engineeering.

Just tried it on Win 8, can't even get to setup.  I think it's something with the actual install and older OS's or something.

ON another note, tried SFC 3 install with beta patch.  I can see the intro movies. then it goes black screen.  I can hear the music, but I can't see anything.

Win 8 has been a bad decision on my part thus far....

Hopefully someone out there can help?

PS: I think it may be related to a resolution problem, but Win 8 doesn't really allow you to change resolutions all that easily.  the lowest seems to be 32 bit....and the compatibility to change it to 16 doesn't do anything.  Tried the -w in the shortcut for the exe, but doesn't seem to work either.

I finally got SFC 1 Gold Edition to install and run, without crashing... well, it did, once.  But the three or so other times I tested it for almost five minutes, it did not crash.

Unfortunately, it seems only to run in 800 x 600 mode in my new Win 8, Nvidia GeForce GT630 M machine.

Even so, I'm now after the old crack program, which I seem to have lost.  Anyone have a copy?

How did you get it to even install?

I can't even get it to start the setup.

Looking for info.

Dash, my initial attempt with the *ORIGINAL* SFC 1 CDs did not work.

However, I forgot I had gotten my kid (who isn't anymore, who hasn't played it in more years than I care to remember, and who won't even look at any SFCs anymore) SFC 1- Gold Edition.  I scrounged the CD out from under a pile of forgotten (most of them rightly so) game CDs, and thought, "What can I lose?  At worst, it just won't install."

But it did, although I appear right now to be limited to 800x600 resolution.  I suspect that the coding for the installation of the game is definitely different, or rewritten, between the release of the original, v. 1.00 (or was it 1.01?  It's been way too long) and the Gold Edition, which is v. 1.02.01.

PM me.  Maybe it was Microsoft that tweaked Win 8 in some update.  I can't be sure, though.

Hello!  I'm glad I found this topic, because this has been a source of frustration for a week.

I was able to get SFC 1 Gold to install okay in Windows 8, the initial movie ran okay, chose the Federation, chose Captain/Skirmish, chose The Duel, got it to run for about sixty seconds, and then... "Windows has found a problem and is going to close the program".  This has happened with Orion Pirates too; SFC2 still having problems getting started.

So 800x600 resolution, you say?  I'll have to try that.  Open to any suggestions, too, please.
