IDW's Trek Reboot series
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:26:30 am »
Interesting reads for anyone who likes comic books.  The first six in the series are re-hashes of three popular 1st season episodes.  They follow the same general lines as the 1st season episodes, but there are noticeable changes.  The most prominent change is of course the ship and the crew of the ship.  As all three of these are season 1, Mr. Chekov had not yet joined the crew in the originals.  Not going to give away too much, as these can still be picked up, although you'll have to request them in a lot of stores as they sold out their allotments quickly, I had to request IDW #6 twice.

IDW #1 and 2 - Where No Man Has Gone Before.  Real changes:  In the original episode only three of the original cast were in their traditional roles, Kirk, Spock, and Scotty. (Sulu was on board, but he was not helmsman at that time)  In McCoy's case that makes it really interesting when they start looking for an answer to Mitchell's problem, as Dr. Dehner didn't want to serve under an ex-boyfriend.

IDW #3 and 4 - The Galileo Seven.  Real changes:  Spock's SECOND chance at command, and a chance to prove himself.  Also Uhura and Spock's relationship.

IDW #5 and 6 - Operation: Annihilate!  There was not a lot of changes to this premise of this story, a bit of technology that wasn't there before was added to make their challenge bigger.

In all three, only the details really change, but they are intended to be used to set up whatever they have planned for next year's movie.  If there is some collusion between them, nothing in the first season of TOS will be covered in the next movie.  I know there's been speculation that the next movie may be a re-hash of Space Seed, but I think that's been shot down.  Obviously there's some collusion, they were told that they could do those episodes, but how much they are in the loop is anyone's guess.

Overall, I feel that these three were very well done, kinda questioning why Operation:Annihilate! was changed the way it was, as all the other two were changed by what the movie did to them, the change to Operation:Annihilate! seemed more external, and unrelated to the movie.  Although it does cover the effect of losing a father you never knew had on James Kirk, so maybe that's why they changed it the way they did.  With these "episodes" though, I feel like I have a bit more appreciation for the 2009 movie, perhaps enough that I might watch it again sometime.  Maybe a real re-hash of The Doomsday Machine, will be the 2013 movie.  That would be a good one, IMO.

Had Chekov not yet joined the crew or was he just not on the bridge crew?  I don't know of any definitive evidence either way.

Although he didn't make his first appearance until season 2, Kahn recognized him in TWOK, which would indicate that he was on the ship earlier.

While recently watching TOS and noticing the uniform issues (Uhura going from Gold to Red for example) I hypothesized that the Gold could also indicate a non specialist.  Uhura was just before specializing in communications.  Chekov stayed non specialist but may in the 1st season been on other duties such as engineering before going on the bridge for the 2nd.

Except for the cast, the 2009 movie was an abomination.

Soooo very true....

I have tried to re-watch it several times - and although it is fun in a goofy action movie way - the science/continuity/logic in it is just sooooooo bad....

Not even.  Most of the cast just sucked.  Scotty was an abomination, Zachary Quinto might have looked the part physically but he was really poor in the role, and Anton Yelchin just sucked.

An actor has to have something to work with!  The part written for Uhura seemed to be a slap at Bill Shatner, and while he might deserve it, that distracted from the story.  The film turned Kirk into a low-life punk.  They made out the Vulcans to be the epitome of racists.  We can go on with lousy story-line and bad parts, but where I have to give kudoes is the only thing the film got right:  McCoy.  The actor and the lines he read were absolutely perfect.  If you were to isolate his performance from the crumby sets and the rest of that sorry film, you'd have something to work with.

The script might have screwed up Spock, but Quinto really didn't help any.  As for Chekov, considering how popular Wesley Crusher was, if the only way they could have added him to the cast was to make him a Russian Wesley, it would have been smarter to leave him out.  Also, based on cast interviews, Yelcin doesn't seem to have understood that Chekov wasn't an actual Russian, as much as he was a 1960s American stereotype of Russians.

They made out the Vulcans to be the epitome of racists.

To be fair, Journey to Babel mentions how the other children used to tease Spock as a child for being half human.

The easing of Spock was also alluded to in TAS. Not that it is cannon of course.

My Biggest problem, through out the whole film, was All kirk did, was to hang around. And by I mean hang around, He just hung around, on the Drill thingie, on the cliff face, on the ramparts in Neo's ship.  He was just like, Hanging on to something, through out the whole movie. Don't get me wrong, It's a great gimmick used in story telling telling, But even King Kong didn't hang onto as much stuff as Kirk did.

The Kirk character himself, did remind me of the young Kirk, in the novels, But that was 16 yo Kirk in those.  In my opinion, that Judge Dread guy who played McCoy,  or what ever his name is, Did the best cross over.

PS. I'm curious how they will address Journey to Babel, without Spocks mommy.
