Minecraft - Multiplayer help needed
« on: March 23, 2012, 07:46:11 pm »
To the group:

My family has become Minecraft obsessed.  We want to play Multiplayer on our lan at home, but can't figure out how to do it.  We do not want to be connected to the Internet when we play Minecraft Multiplayer (it's just a family group). We've gotten somewhere in the ballpark, but that's it.  We know the key is to change the player name, but we can't figure that out.

Has anyone done this successfully?  If so, how?

Thanks.

KC

Minecraft... ahh...  Twice I started building a 1 to 1 model of the Enterprise, twice the file got corrupted and lost.  Maybe with the new height limit I'll try again...

There's a file in the server that controls the server settings, if you set Online mode to False (or No) you can get it to bypass the directory servers in Sweden.  Then you can just use the host computer's local address to connect to.

Thanks LQ.

I had gotten that far, but for a while I had been stumped because each player's name is defaulted to as "Player" causing one person to be bumped out when another enters.  Online, I found a small exe. which changed a player's name and then we had it figured out.

Thanks.

Good that you got that figured out.  We never had a problem with the player's name.  That might have been because we had the leaked "hacked" executable.  I really like the way Mojang handled this.  While they didn't officially support people not buying their stuff, they also didn't want to deal with a "Demo" of the game.  So they hacked their own executable and made it so this version could bypass their verification servers.  The hacked executable had the full functionality of the bought and paid for version up to Release 1.2.  All throughout the Beta, and even the first two Release versions, you could play on either and you wouldn't know the difference (well you would, the hacked version would have a message in the upper corner telling you that it wasn't a legit copy).  With 1.2 though they re-did some of the coding of the servers and while the "hacked" versions still work, they aren't as functional anymore.  I'm not sure when they added 64-bit Java support, but the hacked version doesn't support it, and won't even recognize it if its all you have installed.  I imagine soon it will be to the point where the hacked EXE will be completely non-functional.  Mojang thought that if they let the people pirate the game while it was in the Beta, that most of the people that did that would eventually buy it, and I think their success bears out that thought.
