Retun to Music?

I have been considering picking up a musical instrument after a layoff of too many years. Although I am thinking guitar may be the best does anyone have any other suggestions?

It's up to you man. A guitar is def. easier to carry around than say a Baby Grand, But I've always been partial to Brass, specifically Trumpets. I know we have quite a few Guitar players here, Capt. Mike comes to mind so he would be invaluable in getting information etc.

I've even thought about getting a cheap midi keyboard for the PC, to fart around with.

I just got home from vacation in Mississippi, New Orleans, and Mobile. Dinner at Mulate's in New Orleans while listening to La Touche really got me thinking.

A guitar...the varieties of tuning are enormous, very good ones are inexpensive, and if you pay for my smoked whitefish, I'll set it up for you.

Had a wonderful time up there, we drove along the north shore, dined on smoked fish and cheese curds, and drank the best root beer in the world...and I managed to entice Debbi into Lake Superior..I was standing up to my knees in it (freezing to death) and I said "Come on in dear, the waters fine"....she used words I'd never heard before....

My advice on an acoustic..a mid range Epiphone or Taylor..stay away from Fender acoustics, they're crap...you find you like it, and want to move up, well, I like my Zager, done by Denny Zager of Zager and Evens...lives down in Lincoln NE now a days....

Let us know what you decide...and Deb and I will be back up next summer

I'd go with a guitar, if for no other reason, that as you learn you can play fairly quite, unlike a brass or other instrument.

and of course take the captains advice on what to get.  He might even take a raincheck on the smoked fish (until you get back on your feet better).

Bass guitar  :angel: 5 string .  I suck with 1 string i would love to hear someone here work up a 5 string. Even my cats run from my music but i enjoy trying.  :)

I was a Bass guitar player way, way back.  Was good overall but my free time ran out so got out of practice.

Dude..I have a five string, a  couple 4 strings..a frettless 4 string in combo with a 12 string guitar (acoustic double neck)..an 8 string (dual octives like a 12 string guitar)  and a triple neck with a 4 string bass and a six string and 12 string guitar (electric).

I love repairing them, but Deb hates that I don't resell them.

Looking to buy a steel lap guitar...but in the future

Brush, just to inspire you..I just wish I played as well...he was the reason we went up north..went to his concert in Solon Springs WI...he's about my age, close to 60

The concert Deb and I went to was awesome...outdoor pavillion, lawn chairs, maybe 3 to 4 thousand people, just chilly enough to wear a jacket...and the time just went like no time...his stories are funny, and his playing awesome
