SpaceX to head to ISS
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:45:24 pm »
I saw this the other day was excited to read it, but then life intervened and I promptly forgot about it. (so much so that I don't even have the News Article to link but I do have the link to the Press Release)  Then the topic came back up in a conversation I was having and realized that it wasn't here on the boards... so, I bring this to you now.

As long as the public can afford the price of the ticket. But then if it is NASA then the public can't afford the price of the ticket even though they are subsidizing NASA.

I fear that even if SpaceX nails the launch and docking, and even cleans the windows and leaves breathe mints under the pillows of the ISS inhabitants that Congress and NASA will collaborate to block  or hinder awarding contracts to SpaceX.

Why? Simple - No one in Congress will profit from SpaceX succedding. NASA and the ISS are one hell of a jobs program/vote machine for well connected and entrenched congressmen. They will not allow the evolution of space access to include the real public if it cuts politicians out of the money.

The politicians may well let it happen when the choice is pay an American company or pay the Russians (more than SpaceX).

But that thinking is logical. When dealing with politicians throw logic out in favor of the politicians wealth potential.

I'd bet on any and all congressman selling out to a Russian/Chinese/(insert other than American) interest if the money is right.

I was thinking the main reason the Shuttle program came to an end is becasue the US simply can't afford it.It is not becasue the shuttles are old well they are but as of the US rising deficit.

oh no... the shuttles are extremely old.  They were originally scheduled (when they were first built) to be retired in the early 90s.  But when the Cold War suddenly came to an end, the Space Race took a back seat because Russia couldn't afford to race anymore.  They needed to be retired, it was well past their time.  Now, what the budget problems are doing, is preventing their successor from being ready to go now.  And now we get word that the Russians are halting all their Soyuz flights while they try to figure out what went wrong with their unmanned supply mission two weeks ago.  The people on the ISS are pretty much stranded, they have their lifeboat, but no new supplies are coming up anytime soon.  (or Astronauts for that matter)  In fact, SpaceX may very well be the next ship to visit the ISS, maybe NASA can pay SpaceX to hitch a lift and get the people up there some much needed relief at that point.

They could of kept couple still in service like a DC3 and the Soyuz problem.I would imagine it might mean a call to China. It is going to take some time to get the US Space program up and running again.I would prefer government controled missions.

It would of been nice to see the shuttle Enterprise in space.

Never was going to happen.  One of the reasons I was disappointed with the Trek Fans being so hasty.  Wait until after it's test flight, then do the petition, that way Enterprise would have been in space, instead of just being dropped from a 747, and be done with it.  Had they waited, NASA would have changed the name of one of the newer Orbiters, instead of the prototype.

Actually, the Enterprise was originally intended to be converted for space flight, but NASA decided it would be cheaper to convert the Challenger instead.

Yeah I know.

I was disappointed by that also.  The Enterprise should have been the name of the first shuttle in space.  Not the first test shuttle.

:smackhead: Goverment has been one reason the public is not in space now. Untill the late 90s the public was restricted from traveling in to " space".   Sad to see the billions of $ we spent of the Iss for it to go down in flames due to lack of Goverment now.  I cant help to see it all as a plan to destroy something of worthy.
