Set phasers to ‘remake' ....

Pushing for a new-generation ‘Star Trek’ series

You don’t have to be Mr. Spock to think that a new version of “Star Trek” would be totally logical.

The iconic sci-fi series -- which has gone through five generations since its debut in 1966 with William Shatner as Captain Kirk -- is being prepared for a sixth version, according to reports yesterday.

David Foster, a sci-fi writer/producer/consultant who last worked on “Battlestar Galactica,” has developed an elaborate new version of the series warhorse set within the series’ established timeframe.

Foster, who heads 1947 Entertainment, hopes to eventually pitch the show to CBS, according to trekweb.com.

CBS is the sister company to Paramount, which owns the rights to “Star Trek.”

“While all of the feedback and news has been completely positive and we continue to make great progress and garner support from key individuals, 1947 Entertainment has not yet officially pitched the show to CBS,” Foster told the site.

A new “Trek” series would be huge news in the sci-fi world. The last series, “Star Trek: Enterprise,” starring Scott Bakula, ended in 2005 after four seasons on the now-defunct UPN.

The new version would be set after the “Voyager” era, Foster says.

“The series concept is fully developed, subject to change, of course, with a solid 5- to 7- year series plan, pilot script and conceptualized finale that intends to define ‘Star Trek’ for generations,” Foster says.

“This is a drastic departure from the typical 8- to 10- page treatment of the previously pitched ‘Star Trek’ series ideas that have not included even a pilot script.”

The latest is “designed to return ‘Star Trek’ to its original series roots . . . without disregarding the other series and movies.”

He also said the show would feature a “much younger” cast than previous versions -- and would include “Star Trek” staples including Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, Vulcans and Trill.

“The Ferengi have discovered a vast new resource that has propelled them towards instant riches and power beyond anything they have previously experienced,” he says.

Classic TV shows are coming back to prime time in a big way these days.

A new version of “Hawaii Five-O” did well last year and a “Charlie’s Angels” re-do is set for next month. A new “Bewitched” is also reportedly in the works.

But the “Star Trek” franchise is perhaps the most sturdy TV series ever.

There have been 11 big-screen “Star Trek” movies alone.

BACKTREKKERS: It’s been 45 years and four versions since the original “Star Trek.”

I'm ready for some new Trek. heck even the fan made films are better than no Trek at all.

Hate to say it, but the fan made stuff is BETTER than most of the crap Paramount has produced over the last decade...

That is awful news. While I realise that Star Trek is the original politically correct casting, this Foster character takes it to a whole new level of selling out. This is going to be awful. There have already been Trek Porn parodies made. I bet this one won't even be funny.

I'm with Bonk on this one, in fact this makes me cringe.  I'd be happier with a reboot of ToS the this but then that is being shown in theaters already.   ::)  What they need is to hire the people who are writing the Burn Notice and Hawaii Five-O series, those are good shows.  Oh well, maybe we will get a new SFC game out of it.   ;)

I think that they should avoid a lot of the continuity problems by having a lost and crashed ship in a far distant part of the galaxy set out to build a new Federation there.  Much of their tech would not be reproducible so you could drop back to older less magical tech (Enterprise level or older) and all new races rather than messing with the existing ones.

That's not a bad idea. Reminds me somewhat of a series of books called New Earth set in the TNG universe. Good stuff from what I remember.

Here are some ideas I would like to see:

- Earth-Romulan War for between Enterprise and TOS.
- Full-out time travel show. They have a future figured out for the next 400 years, use it!
- An anti-hero Trek, like Firefly but in the Trek continuity. I want to see exposure of a deep conspiracy in the Federaion.

If you are going to do something after Voyager, I say do something very far into the future, so far that it is unrecognizable to give it a fresh start.

REAL sad to think the remaker of the BSG is a do it agian for Trek , :-X !   I will watch but if any epp has to do with real world crap im not a fan as ITS NOT REAL TO TREK . Im a bit sick of media thinking for us with TV. I guess we will see love or hate it.  Edit Post tng blows so already i am not a fan. Easy to tell the story of what they make up But not easy to show thoughts with a theme that someone has already written up. Trek whatever it should be called.

Earth Romulan War sounds good, the lost era would be nice to, Ambassador classes, post Kitomer accords....
But I do like that idea about a lost ship, almost like Stargate Universe, reminds me of the novels Star Trek Titan with the off shoot of humans in another Galaxy, after a while their physical appearances changed, almost the same English language but not quite, and their conquest for domination kicked in, I think they called themselves the Khelvins....

Adam

Voyager was the Lost ship idea Hell dont remake that Please :'( No Books No tos No tmp No tng No post tng and Hell no Pre anything! THat is up to the real world to figure out!   If its a remake REMAKE it  dont mix up the themes! Fraking looserwood themes these days.

Since it will be post Voyager ...... perhaps it will deal with the post Shinzon era.  The Star Empire is in chaos.  The Tal Shiar vs. the Commanders loyal to the Empire.   Lots of potential there.  The making of alliances and the possible acts of treachery within the Star Empire as well as the Klingons.

The amazing thing to me about ST (esp TNG, but VOY and Enterprise also, and DS9 somewhat) was how it imagined the way people would be in the future. Dealing with challenges yes, but pursuing a higher way of being and growing the human condition in the process.

If BSG get a hold of trek it WILL be an ever raunchier form of Farscape/Lexx/Firefly and stuff. The only human condition will be drama, hatred of fellow man, and sex. (I guess just like the new ST movie) Which by definition is NOT what trek was originally about. It makes me angry because I like to imagine the future as a good place to be, not as a place were everyone is always unhappy and backstabbing each other.

I actually liked Farscape but whatever.  What I would like to see is a show based on Sulu's character commanding the Excelsior.  I'm sure we could even get John Cho to play the part of Sulu.  But then since these people want to include the Ferengi, why don't we create a show based on Clint Eastwood's "Josey Wales"??!?  I could see the movie quote "dying ain't much of a liven boy" getting some use in this type of thing.

This new series sounds like Voyager, all over again.  I didn't even bother to watch that one after the first few episodes.

That time frame is too far ahead for today's audience.  A younger cast would make sense, since you probably couldn't tell a 70 year old from a college freshman.  How much could we have in common with people from the 25th Century?  How much real work could a person do, when the technology exists to make holographic doctors and such?  The time setting is just too far out.

I have a better idea.  Somebody mentioned "the lost era."  Personally, I'm sick of the sanitary Federation.  I'd make a series that takes place on a Klingon Ship, a tired old rust-bucket of a ship assigned to the Federation boarder during the Klingo-Romulan War.  The series premier would take place during the Kitimer Massacre.  There would be a constant running commentary on humanity, from an alien perspective.  It would be much like the WWF, except the cast would be much prettier.

- Earth-Romulan War for between Enterprise and TOS.

According to the dates set (before Enterprise was filmed) it should have taken place between the last two episodes of Enterprise.
