I like it. Familiar design, yet a bit "throwback" and interesting. Would make a good TOS reserve cruiser.

Has certain similarities to what a Kelvin-prise would be like, hmm?

It looks like it'd be smaller than a Constitution class, from how the windows and such are scaled.  I'd think it'd look a little less like a Connie, but that's just my take on the matter.

At one time, earlier Connies were supposed to only have 24 warp instead of 30, and maybe a few less weapons.  This looks like that interim vessel, as I remember it being described.

My only suggestion would be to make the warp nacelles look more naked, so you could see exposed warp field generator coils and such, to make it feel more like it is from the beginning of the federation/early years.  Just a thought.

Not too garish, just kinda like looking under the hood of a well detailed muscle car.

The Saucer and warp engines are modled from Rick Sternback's  Baton Rouge class  Cruiser  that was featured it the Space flight
chronology book

Here's a wiki entry that I found on the Baton Rouge.  for the Longest time all we had to go on was a top view of the baton Rouge
and the painted illustration later on Rick posted on the web a draft elevation view of the ship.

http://stexpanded.wikia.com/wiki/Baton_Rouge_class

Yes I definitely see the Confederation class as being an early cruiser design  :)

On a whim, I did a quick Google search for Federation early years cruiser, and came across these webpages:

http://www.robinomicon.com/c/news.php?rowstart=55

While having nothing to do with this thread, that's some nice detailing on the engines on his USS Star League!

and

http://www.rhjunior.com/Forum/index.php?topic=8946.0

No idea on what the backstory for the USS Titan/Bismark class depicted there is, but an interesting design nonetheless.  The blockiness makes this feel 'earlier' to me, and less sleek.

you can find my TOS fleet here http://www.robinomicon.com/c2/downloads.php?cat_id=11 which is where that came from.

Exactly where I was going with it.. looking to just throw a little "glass" over the warp coils and that's it.  Looking to do something similar to what Gabe Koehner has going with his Enterprise.  I'm also doing the same thing on the sides so that carries into the inside strip, but you only get a teeny hint from this picture.

So.. this is where I'm hoping that someone has his ships and can PM me with a download link or five.. I've sent Mudd a PM, but so far he hasn't gotten back to me as of yet.  The ship won't be 100% accurate to the pictures presented, but it should be at least 90% using I Mudd's parts here, and it should be a pretty ship once completed.  :D

Btw, before anyone thinks I'm doing a JJ on this, I'm completely not or you'd see lens flares all over the meeting room once the ship will be complete.  ;)

(edit:  AHA!  Think I found my copies of some of his stuff.. have the Amarillo II, Mars, some of his Scrapyard, Baton Rouge, Republic, Daedalus, Federation, Larson, John Markus, Akula, and Saladin.. between all of them, I should have something to build with.  ;)

And there's the Baton Rouge saucer.. so I think I'm on my way..

So, Atheorhaven, how did you get a background in that mod viewer?

Simple.. tired of the blue all the time, so simply copy an image into Paint Shop Pro, capture my Mod Viewer image, Magic Lasso the blue, paste my image into the selected area.. and starry night with my ship.  :)

Not so tough, but it'd be nice to have a means to point Mod Viewer to an image or even change the colour to black (that one might be possible by decompressing the Mod Viewer binary and then doing a search and replace for the binary value of that blue with 00000000, most likely one at a time with an undo of the last change until the right one  is hit).

Okay, playing around with it, I've gone for a saucer and nacelle replacement.  I didn't have to do the nacelle replacement, but sue me.. I think these look cooler.  ;)

So I'm using a Connie secondary hull and pylons, the Helena nacelles and finally the Baton Rouge saucer with Helena saucer textures on it.  Still WIP, but you can see the results as I went along last night.  (My home internet went down last night due to storms, so couldn't post posts until today.   Shots went from early fitting (earlier shots) to better texture matching.  The last two shots are comparison shots using the earlier screen shots, textures are currently sitting where they're at in the M Class world shot.  Getting closer, so the M-World shot was just a test shot to see how it'd look flying.  :D

Finally, compared it to the original model shots.. it's not bad.  Back of the neck is a bit different angle, and more of a hump at the top of the secondary hul.. but all in all, not too bad.  :)

I like! Textures on the nacelles could stand to be matched closer to the rest of the ship, but that's small cookies.

Yup, colour matching isn't done yet.. I just got 'em close to check and see how it will look once completed.

Really liking how this is looking, but should also ask.. Bernard, is this close enough for you, or did you want original naclees back on it?  If original, I'll do so, and just release this one as a refit or something.  ;)

Quick update, colour matching isn't done yet, and I have to find the dark banding on the secondary hull yet.. but meshes are complete..

Both versions here.. Connie nacelles are v2, Helena nacelles are v1.  Also, v1 has the larger impulse deck to more match the picture that Bernard posted.. wondering how I'm going to do the weird dual lit structure that's on the top and still have it look decent..

Quick note: should have some time (I think) to work on these this weekend.  With summer coming to a close, work has been super busy and the honey-do list isn't shrinking quickly enough.  :p

But at the very least, want to get colour matching done this weekend so that it can be released soon.  :)

Truth be told, I never left; I lurk here quite a bit.

I never tumbled to Lightwave, just 3DS Max and Daz Studio.
What your probably referencing is Daz Studio work. (Meh, it was a phase.)

I thought I do a version for SFC 1.

The engine meshes are from a Moskova, which are the closest I could find to the plastic model.

The secondary hull mesh is from a CA, I cannot remember who's, with a shortened landing pad.

The saucer I had to make.

The Impulse drive started out as a pod on the Taldren SFC 1 Klingon freighter.

It took just over an hour using the MFCSFCED modelling tool, bearing in mind that a lot of this time was spent doing the textures.

I generally cut 'n' shut starships, with a bit of manipulation of polys, just for the fun of doing it. I have gradually amassed a whole breakers yard of starship parts, some borrowed, others I created. I study how some are created to figure out how to create some of my own.

I gave the Confederation the following specs in the LAN games we occasionally run here:

Shields = 24, 22, 20, 18
Warp = 12 per engine.
Impulse = 5
APR = 1
Btty = 1
Ph2 = 2 x FH, FRRX, FLLX, RH
Photons = 2 x Double launchers FA
Crew = 15
Deck = 4
Marines = 6 (12)
Shuttles = 4
Suicide = 1
Weasle = 1
Tractors = 2
Transporters = 2
Movecost = 0.75
Breakdown = 5
Turn = C
HET Nimble = 1
Acceleration = 10

I place the Confederation, in terms of Federation cruiser evolution, just before the start of the "Franz Joseph" style TOS fleet, maybe less than 5 years, as it is clearly a halfway house between the Baton Rouge and the Equinox, Horizon, Archon, Agincourt, Constitution, Achenar and Tikopai cruisers and heavy cruisers that followed.

Maybe I'll release it, though originally it is a private build. I've been preparing for a possible future LAN campaign for the Klingon - Federation 4 years war (2241 - 2245) that was mentioned by McCoy in relation to Sherman's Planet during TOS "The Trouble With Tribbles" episode.

We've already tried out skirmishes for this campaign and also the earlier Kzinti - Federation incursion dispute during the 2220's / 2230's.

I used a lot of parts and textures, form SFC 1, SFC 2 and SFC 3, from various modellers so the permissions and acknowledgements thing has to be sorted out.

The Constitution Class entered service in the closing stages or after the war had finished in 2245, possibly as a result of deficiencies and losses in existing Federation cruisers. The Franz Joseph style fleet dates from 2245, with modifications in 2265 (Constitution bridge and warp nachelles end caps).

So far I've modelled the Confederation, Equinox (pre Horizon conversion), Horizon, Mann and Avery (first launch and 1st upgrade) classes.

I need to possibly model the Hyperion Class. The 2nd hull is done but the saucer needs some consideration.

The which version of the Baton Rouge is debateable as when exactly did Star Fleet realise that a heavy cruiser capable of only Warp 4.8 would be better suited for conversion into a shuttle carrier??

Another project is the original pre-2245 Saladin Class destroyers, which should possibly resemble the Avery Class scout without the 2nd hull. Apparently it is possible that there were originally only 10 in the 1st production run.

I've also modelled the Kovaris (DD-460) class destroyer, which was based on the long serving Burke class frigate.

Most of the other required ships, expecially the Klingon fleet for 2241, has already been modeled by myself or a few of you guys out there.

The Klingons have many ways to fry a cat. I prefer to use an L7 Fast Battlecruiser!!

I need to modify the saucer textures a bit more. The yellow triangles I'm going to have as red, to match the Rich Sternbech Baton Rouge illustration and from which class the saucer is from. I've no idea why they're red on the kit model. The upper sensor dome should also be red.

The model shown is just a proving model to try out in LAN games here. Better details will be added later but I have other projects in the slipways.

That's generally how things are done here.... a sort of OK but rough model is created so as to be available for some LAN skirmish or campaign, followed by a refined version later. As I'm the only person able to do the modelling, though my son did make a Centaur class destroyer 2 years ago, everybody just leaves it to me to do or convert from SFC 2 and SFC 3 into SFC 1, then whinges that it doesn't look precisely like the downloaded illustration, diagram or book straight away. They're still happy enough to fly them into battle though or shoot holes through them.

Yes, I'm not satisfied with the textures yet either.

I'll be glad to see it out, so far I have had literally zero time to do anything.  We started our weekend Saturday morning, were out until 11pm Saturday, slept, and left at 11am Sunday for a 600 mile trip out and back.  Got home at 1am last night.

None of this is helping me get models out.  :P

Well I've already decided that I'm not happy with the engines on my version as Moskva engines would be 50 years out of date by the time the Confederation entered service, so I'm either going to have a go at the ones on the plastic model as shown or use the type I modelled for the Horizon class that was launched within a decade afterwards. I could possibly claim it as an upgrade.

I checked the Sternbach Baton Rouge illustration in the book and the triangles are actually the same US Navy Ghost Grey as the rest of the hull. All I can say is perhaps they are escape pods. They could be painted yellow later as policy for escape pods I suppose. The top sensor dome is still transparent red though.

I'll post up the Horizon when I'm finished and satisfied with it.

Okay, just have the base Connie texture to colour match a bit better, and then should be ready to send out.

Upper ship is the v2 (Connie hull and nacelles) and the lower is the v1 (Republic hull and Helena nacelles).  Also, have to do a smoothing repair from the looks of the primary hull.
