Nice. Will you be doing a version without the shadows on them?

no, planets are half covered in shadow, there is no reason for them not to be especially since sfc doesn't have mutliple source lighting

They look great! Doesn't the game cast the shadow on the planets itself. Will they look weird if the baked-in shadow doesn't line up with the game engine's effect?

the game doesn't cast raytraced shadows, it could be better described as shading than anything else.  and no it won't look wierd, it will actually look more real.  The planets are set up specifically so the game engine will place the light side always facing the light source.

Sweet!

Will these be compatible with Firesoul's OP+ hard pointed planets?

How does the game know which is the light side and the dark side? Are you matching "front" and "Back" to the in-game planets? Also, should any of the planets have a tilt, e.g. the earth is 32 deg.?

KF: yes, these are compatable w/ the ones i re-hped for - thats sorta the reason for doing them ;)

IM: Basically its orientation of the model.  The 'front' will always be pointing toward the light source.  As for tilt that also depends on position in orbit, technically speaking if these planets had a tilt they would be in the fall/spring position in their orbits since the tilt isnt' pronounced in the shadow.

Progress on the tech planet, Tus.

I need to ridge it up, get rid of the monotony, but its a basic starting point.
I kind of want to throw a bit of a coppery look in there, too :).

I see someone is useing Planetscape Tool for Photoshop, the only problem with Planetscape is that it only supports 8bit colors

aye, Lunar cell is what i'm using, its pretty good for getting started, but I wouldn't use it to create the 'finished' product.  Basically use it to create the color maps & bumps, ocean masks, cloud maps and bumps .  I do know how to make those, they are just time consuming and a pain in the ass.  From there its alot finagling to include retouching, modifciations, additions, subtractions, etc to the maps to get them to look right.

There are a few in which I don't use it, such as actual maps and a few of the rocky ones (such as fire world)
