model.siz file - how to generate it?
« on: May 09, 2011, 08:14:57 pm »
OK, after nearly 10 years of modding the SFC OP, I am still amazed at how modifiable the game is, and the smarts of the SFC community.

Well, I need to know something else about the game:  the model.siz file.  In my Rod Oneal version of SFC OP, there is a file in the models directory called model.siz which I believe can adjust the size of models in the game.  However, in my modified OP version, there is not a model.siz file.

So.... how do you generate the model.siz file?  What do you need to do to edit the size of say a Taldren stock model (I want to make a fighter sized version of a Klongon frigate)?

Any info is most appreciated.

The model.siz file should be in your assets/models folder all you need is a plain text editor, like Notepad.

To generate a models.siz file, do the following:

Quote
Open the SFC.INI file in the main SFC3 directory.

Add the line writeoutmodelsizfile=1 in the file, in the section labled [3D]

Remove any models from the models folder that you do not wish to size IE Planets, Stock ships.....

Start up your game and go into Single Player Skirmish

When you click on "Start Single Player" button, your game will hesitate. Depending on the speed of you computer and the number of files you have in the models folder, it could take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. You game will act locked up, but it's not. Don't close it or it won't work. When the screen changes to the Mission Selector screen, just back out and exit the game. Go to the Models folder in your game, and you'll see a file called Model.siz Open that file in notepad and it'll have every model listed that was in the folder followed by it's size. For whatever reason, it puts decimal points in. The size of 7.78 in the file will be 778 in the DefaultCore. Put the size value in the last column of numbers for the ship(s) you wanted to size, and there ya go. It will size the shields to the proper fit around the ship, and it will adjust the zoom so you can see where you are flying as well.

**Please Note: If you get an error report durring the writing process, when the game is locked up, Don't panic. If you have too many ships in the Models folder, it can't handle it. Just take the file you get, copy it out and rename it. Find out where it left off and remove the files it already sized. It lists the ships in alphabetical order by the name of the folder. Just find out which ship it stopped on and remove all folders before that and run again.

***After you run the program, you can switch the 1 to a 0 on the line you added. That way you'll still have the line if you need it and won't have to go searching for this post. Just switch it back to a 1 to work (0 is turned off, duh)

Note that in SFC3 Models.siz only effects shield size and camera zoom for each ship. I don't think that it changes the actual model.

Make sure you have the newest/ lastpatch for SFC OP. It should include the model .siz file .   It can be edited but im not sure why one would need to as I recall it was created to make any non properly scaled model to work with the engine to be legaly playable.  If a person wants a dn to be a fighter just put it in the fighter slots the siz file suposed to rescale it to fit its role???  Ahhhh my memory please SFC crew tell him the truth ?

Thanks guys.  Yep, the problem was that we were not running the latest version.  We reinstalled and updated to 2.552 (or whatever is the latest) and the model.siz file showed up in Models.

I adjusted it successfully and adjusted the size of a frigate easy.  Now, the question is: how do I update the model.siz folder to add variants and various ships downloaded from the wonderful works of others?   Do I type it into the folder, or is there a way to update automatically?

Does the model (to be added) need to be directly in the models folder, or can it be in another folder within models?

In this thread, IM suggested adding code to the SFC.ini file, but I notice it references SFC 3, and we're playing SFC OP.  Does it still make sense to do it for OP?

Thanks guys.

Hi Bob,

When I edited the model.siz file I did it manually. It was because I wanted to control the model sizes and not have them automatically scaled by the game. If you have the game generate your model.siz file your models will come in at their "real" sizes. For example, if you use modeler "A" Connie for your FCA and modeler "B" Connie for your FCA+ and they aren't both scaled the same, they will appear as different sizes in game. Just like their was no model.siz file. You can go into the model.siz file and set them to both appear as the same size in game by using the same value for both. Stock size is 8.47, for instance.

P.S. IIRC the file has to be in the models folder. It's been a while, but I seem to recall that's where the game looks for it.

Thanks Rod (yet again).

Guys, thanks so much.  After all these years, it's like a new version of the game, yet again.
