Odd graphical artifacts on start up.
« on: May 08, 2011, 03:55:26 am »
Usually, when this is the case, I figure the card is overheating, bad, or the Power supply is going out.

So I ran down my list of things. Mind you this is an old AGP system.

I tried two different AGP cards, an X1600 pro, and an older X800 (ATI)

Both had artifacts. Tried again, with switching the VGA cable. same thing.

Tested both cards on an even older system, and they both where fine, so I'm thinking the new PS is going bad. So I take it out, and move it from system to system, and they all boot up. So I think, I have an ancient 32 mb voodoo card, and I try it on the system I was initially working with, and no problems. So I know it's not the board, the PS, or the cards.

Is it possible to have an AGP slot itself go out on a board, but leave everything else ok? Kind of at a loss here guys.

How bad are the artifacts? if its a choice between living with them or going with a voodoo card, I'd go with the artifacts. Just me, though.

They are pretty bad man. I can make out F2-> Setup and maybe AMD at the bottom of the mess. The rest is blockish squares and random characters through out.

My money is that its a problem with the motherboard or cpu, not that there are many other options >.<

I'd suspect the motherboard/just the AGP slot if everything else on the motherboard is working that is, if possible maybe try switching to integrated graphics or a PCI video card (matching whichever versions of PCI you have on there)? if neither is possible my strongest suspect though is the motherboard

That's kind of what I'm thinking also guys. IT's an old K8T NEO from MSI, so no integrated graphics at all.  And I was able to get a screen using the old Voodoo PCI card (not the PCI's that came out after AGP, but the really old ones that replaced ISA's.

If it was the power supply then all sorts of things would be going haywire and not just the video card.  Although a bad power supply can fry a motherboard/CPU in short (pardon the pun) order.  If this was a video card that was powered directly by the power supply then I might question the power supply directly but this doesn't appear to be the case.  So you may in fact have two issues here and not just one with a bad power supply and motherboard/CPU.  Since you tried a video card that you know works in the suspect system, have you tried the video card you thought was bad in a system that you know works?  The other thing I would suggest is when you take out the video card, take a look at the AGP slot and see if there is any dust, dirt, or anything else stuck in there.  Likewise take a look at the AGP interface on the video card itself and see if it is clean.  Either issue can mimic the problem of a bad motherboard.

After that I would check out your hard drive and see if there are any errors on the disk.  How old is the hard drive by the way?  Is the hard drive making any clicking noises?  If the game you are playing or the operating system is saved to a bad sector then this could also give you problems.

Once you take a look at the hard drive, AGP slot, and video card I would have the power supply and mother board/CPU tested and see if it is still good.  And yes it's good to test both power supply and motherboard/CPU because if you swap out the motherboard/CPU and the power supply is bad then you could fry your motherboard/CPU out again.  I'd hate to see you fry out a second motherboard/CPU needlessly.

Hope this helps.

Yep Javora, it does. I've done pretty much everything you suggested bro, while trying to narrow it down. PS is good, Video cards run on other systems, I've even tried messing with the Ram to see if that was causing a problem.

Wound up just using the PS , Memory , and HD's on an old Emachine board the sis in law gave me years ago (also a 939). Sadly no AGP slot on it, but I'll grab a new vid card down the road. All the wife does is go on face book, and play Bejewled , so on board graphics is fine with her.

LOL, I did load up Age Of Conan on her machine, and was rocking out at 12 FPS using the onboard ATI Xpress 200 LOLOLOL

Sounds like my old machine, I even once was in a raid on my old computer and ended up finding from the group I was (this happened about halfway through the raid on one of the smaller bosses) that what I was seeing on my computer was about 30 mins behind the entire party lol (not lag from the net just graphics lag since my vid was so poor heh)
